freshman housing - deposit now?

Is it going to be ok for S to decide on housing once he has decided where he is going to go to school? Or does he pretty much need to make a deposit now?

He does not need to deposit at Pitt now. If your son wants to live in honors housing or a living learning community, that will require an application and none of them are prioiritized by when they are received. Your son will need to send in those applications by the deadlines.

Housing at Pitt is not prioritized by deposit dates. As long as you submit by the deadline (May 1) he will have an equal chance for any dorm at Pitt.

He has to apply to be in honors housing although he’s part of the UHC? Is this not one in the same?

Not everyone who is eligible chooses to live in honors housing. My daughter chose to live in an international learning commu ity instead of honors housing. Engineers might select the SPACE floors rather than honors.

^ not familiar with SPACE, but that would likely be S’s interest for housing.

If your son is eligible for honors and engineering, ask around about the SPACE option. I have not heard anything about it. The two engineering kids I knew lived honors housing. It is very nice to have people to talk with about classes. DD chose the learning community, which was a big mistake, because they were all humanies-major party girls and DD was double majoring at that time in physics and Japanese. She had a hard time finding people to study with.

Yes, because more than 400 freshman will be in UHC. Honors housing isn’t automatically given to all UHC students, it is an appplication process like any other LLC. However, I highly recommend it because it is a much better atmosphere than anything I heard about from Towers/Holland.

If your S is a UHC Engineer who plans on taking Honors classes, I’d say that he should live in UHC housing, not SPACE. My friends who did SPACE their freshman year always ended up coming to UHC housing to study and hang out, since most of the honors freshman were living in the UHC dorm. SPACE is a great second choice, but having already been surrounded by engineers all day, I think it’s good to live in a slightly different (more diverse) environment of people.
