Freshman Housing Question

I was recently admitted into the class of 2018 and I am pretty sure this is where I will be attending next year, however there are a few schools that I have to wait on. I have had multiple family members attend and I have visited several times and I know that if I go I want to live in the six-pack freshman year. I was wondering how early will I need to accept my offer and secure housing to guarantee a spot in the six-pack. Like to I need to apply for housing as soon as it comes out or can I do it around April once all of my other decisions and financial information is released> Thanks for any help.

I believe you can apply anytime before May 15th, 2014 to be part of priority housing. I couldn’t find an exact date online, but that’s what they told me for last year when I accepted my offer. I know it seems late to be priority, but anytime before that you get put into the priority “lottery”. Now, that doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be on the six pack, but if you set your priority as location AND sign the contract before May 15th, then you will have the best chance possible to be there.

Do you know if you want to room with a friend you already know or with a stranger?

Since about 4 years ago, UIUC switched from a system where housing was doled out in order of acceptances of admission and applications for housing in the campus residence halls, which favored those who accepted early, to a lottery system where everyone who accepts admission by May 1 and applies for the campus residence halls by May 15 is put in a lottery system, and thus applying earlier than May 15 provides no advantage. If you wait to apply after May 15, you will likely end up in temporary housing because you will not be awarded any housing until after such awards are made to all those who applied by May 15. You should also note, if you are considering applying for Private Certified Housing rather than the campus residence halls, that those still follow the practice of granting housing in the order of applications received and thus applying early to those does create an advantage.

Does UIUC have separate housing for honor students.

@UIUCgrin I’m indifferent about rooming with a stranger or friend, my best friend and I have always planned to room together but he got deferred and isn’t even sure if he wants to go. Why does this make a difference?
