I've been a little slow to apply to housing and I was wondering if spaces are given out on a "first-come, first-served" basis. Freshmen can live in private certified housing, right? I was wondering if it's not too late to try to find a place close to the engineering buildings.

It depends on whether you’re applying to private certified or university housing. Private residence halls all have different application policies, so you’d have to check with whichever one you’re interested in. As for university housing, no, I don’t believe they run the housing lottery until a little later. And yes, freshmen may live in private certified housing.

I just thought I’d mention this though: even if you’re an engineering major, it might not be worth it to specifically choose housing near the Bardeen quad your freshman year. Unless you’re going into UIUC with a hefty amount of AP credit, most of your classes will be gen ed’s found closer to the main quad. That’s why places like ISR don’t typically have many freshmen.

According to their website all applications before the priority deadline of April 15 will be randomized and drawn from.

(This is for the residence halls)

Hemdar is incorrect. The priority deadline is May 15th

I’m sorry; rather, muffincakes

“All contracts received by May 15 will be placed in random order, and assignments will be made in that order. After we place contracts in random order, we will begin to make assignments based on the preferences you supply in your online contract. Hall or LLC notifications for this group will be sent out in late May/early June.”

I got my info from here: [Undergraduate Hall Assignments | University Housing at Illinois](http://www.housing.illinois.edu/en/Future/Incoming/Undergraduate%20Hall%20Assignments.aspx)

Yeah, i made a typo there, thanks for catching it!

No problem! :)

hendrick house is very close to the engineering department. its private certified, the process of applying is first come first serve, but it was really smooth for me and they are really nice people. the food is the best on campus. check them out

i’ve never been to illinois, so I’m not too sure wad is the weather like over there, but from wad i understand, the weather over there is pretty extreme; super chilly in winters n very hot in summers. Is this true? Because i really wana get into allen hall but it doesn’t have air-con, so I’m worried tt it may be uncomfortable to live there during hot seasons. I know tt i can bring a fan there, but I’m used to sleeping in air-con rooms( cos i grew up in a warmer region). What should i do? :(

Most of the school year in Urbana you would not really need air. The hottest months would be June -August, when school mostly is not in session. Obviously you do not need it for winter, and fall and spring is not typically hot. You should be fine with a fan.

“very hot” sounds to me like an overstatement. Compared to warmer climates south of Illinois, it’s a pretty cold state. During the summertime it can get rather warm, but I don’t see why you would be there during the summer anyway. Really your biggest concerns would be early fall and late spring, and from what I’ve heard a fan really does do the job.

Then again it’s up to you, if you feel AC is a must a place like ISR might be the best option.
