Freshman Housing

Hey guys,

my girlfriend is an incoming Freshman. She is an ED2'er. Now, her question is, which campus is better to live on? She doesn't wanna be completely secluded(what sh heard about MOunt Vernon).... is it true that NOBODY parties or ventures out to the city from Mount Vernon??
but she also does not want to party like 24/7. Alright, thanks for any input.

No one else has replied, so I’ll bite–

My (very social) son is finishing his first year at MV. Most of his friends are at MV, but he has others at FB as well. They are all over the place on weekends and definitely partake in everything DC has to offer. He does not find the bus to be an inconvenience (I’ve asked him), though others may differ. West Hall and the library are beautiful, and for him being right next to the gym and athletic fields was perfect. I don’t if he’s used the pool or tennis courts much, but the times we visited they were busy. He’s made good friends and definitely enjoyed freshman year. Being from the suburbs, it was a good place to transition into city living. I think you’re apt to find a core group of friends no matter where you live.

I’m a current undergrad who lives in FB. People do venture out from the vern but there are few who ever come to the vern for a party. The facilities are very nice at Mt. Vernon and the people I know that live there seem to enjoy it. But the social scene is mostly central to FB.

I lived on the Vern 5 years ago, when I was a freshman at GW. I actually loved living there. I lived in Somers Hall; my dorm was gorgeous and newly renovated. I lived in a double, and shared my bathroom with the double next to me. Honestly, Somers was much nicer than my sophomore dorm! The new Pelham Hall (or West Hall) is really cool; it is brand new and has a theatre, recording studio, and a dining hall in the basement. If I were a freshman (again) I would want to live there for sure. You actually have a single, and then share a common living area with 4-6 other students.

Mt. Vernon is not as social as Foggy, but it is definitely social. The entire campus is freshmen, so it is hard not to make friends there. Thurston is not just social, it is flat out crazy. It is definitely the dorm for a partier. Even if your gf doesn’t live on the Vern, I recommend she doesn’t live in Thurston if she is not a huge partier.

In terms of getting to and fro, the Vern Express is a huge pain. Maybe it has improved since I lived there, but I found it annoying. Mostly when I had to be at class on the main campus during rush hour because then I would have to plan to leave up to 45 minutes before my class started. However, many classes are offered up on the Vern itself, so you could avoid that problem. On weekends, however, I was down at Foggy almost every night. It’s only a 10 minute bus ride when the city isn’t in rush hour.

I’m a freshman who was assigned housing on the Vern and honestly the vast majority of people who live here did NOT choose to do so and as a result either spend their weekends on partying on Foggy or make the most of it. My dorm, the smallest one on the MV campus, got busted for a party on the first weekend of school. Thursday-Saturday nights, people are drinking and smoking (hookah is big here) and what have you. However, it gets old and it’s definitely worth having friends on Foggy Bottom.
I would recommend that your girlfriend try and get into Madison, Crawford, or Potomac, mainly because the Vern Express is a complete hassle and it can feel pretty isolated here. She should avoid Thurston if she’s not super into the party scene.
