Life in Somers

I would like to hear from anyone who lived in Somers on the Mt. Vernon campus. Seems that Thurston is the desirable freshman dorm, so I am wondering what the ups and downs of living in Somers are in comparison to Thurston. Is it totally isolating?

Although it’s more convenient to live in main campus, Somers and the rest of the dorms are beautiful in the Vern, and not as isolated as you may think. Also, many classes are held right at the campus, such as many geography labs, for which the ones like me living in Thurston had to get up earlier to make it, while you have it right there. Besides, the athletic fields are there, and if you end up playing club or varsity, you can get up later than us, and go straight to the field. There is more of a campus feel at the Vern. Either way, the express bus takes you in 15 mins from Vern to the main campus and viceversa. I hope it helps, good luck!

Thanks for your reply. My big concern is that it will be hard to make friends with the rest of the freshmen living on Foggy Bottom… does living on the Vern tend to exclude you from the wider social life, or do people from the Vern mix in with the larger GW community fairly easily?

Can you offer advice to freshmen living on Mt. Vernon for ways to connect with others living on Foggy bottom-- other than frequenting Thurston parties. Thanks! I’m thrilled to be accepted at GW and looking forward to awesome internships and life in D.C.

well its only going to be natural that most likely ur closest and best firends will be fellow students living in somers or elsewhere on the vern…just as students in thurston will be more friends together than they would with students living in potomac…but it does not exclude u from makin friends from foogy bottom

agree with Pat. GW is one school altogether, and people don’t interact just to party.
You’ll learn quickly that MV is not as secluded-and excluded- at it seems now. Are your classes mostly in Foggy Bottom? what’s your area of interest? they are clubs for every area of study you want to pursue, and that connects you with people from both cammuses. Good Luck tomorrow!
