GW Living - Mt. Vernon Campus

Any pros or cons from recent or current students or parents? Do students who live there feel out of the loop? Also, where are the main indoor sports/gym facilities? Thanks

if you go to search tab and write the keyword Mount Vernon housing, or dorms, there are many posts related to the matter. Bottom line, it depends on your personality, and taste if you like the campus feel or the city, populated type of environment> Having said that, te dorms at mt V are beautiful. Classes are being held there as well.

Thanks – will do. We didn’t have time to see the Mt. Vernon campus when we visited. A daily fix of green would be nice, though we know it houses just a small percentage of the student body.

I heard new dorms (Pelham Hall) were opening next year on the Mount Vernon campus. They’re supposed to be really nice!

I think Pelham is only for rising Juniors and Seniors, but I may be wrong. Check on it

Hi there. I toured Pelham last month (it was a hard hat tour for rising freshman and sophmores) and they expect it to be mostly freshman and sophomores. Once they knew how many upperclassman were requesting it in February, then they’ll know how many incoming freshman can be housed there. The caf there is phenomenal and will offer food service until 2 AM (!) plus there is a gym, conference/multi purpose rooms, a black box theatre, music studios…etc. There are 4 singles per suite with a small living room, bathroom and kitchenette. It is one of the more expensive rooms available, and the single rooms are very small (maybe 8x10 including the closet) and felt a bit claustrophobic to us, but, overall, Pelham will be a fantastic option.

I also got into Henley, a small dorm on MV, and it was very nice with large rooms and bathrooms - a double was approx 20x14 with 2 large closets. Somerset is very nice with doubles, generally sharing a bathroom in between 2 rooms, and the Ames dining hall is there (which has a really nice outdoor dining terrace. Haven’t seen Clark. The athletic fields are on the MV campus, plus an outdoor pool and tennis courts. The library is really nice. There definitely seems to be more of a sense of community on MV.

Also, I’ve taken the MV shuttle at least 10 times during 3 trips to GW, and it averages 10 minutes from FB to MV, and 17 minutes MV to FB because they take a longer route around the campus. I have traveled during rush hour, with the worst travel time being 24 minutes MV to FB and 18 minutes FB to MV, so not as bad as I would have thought. It really is a tough choice to make because MV is really nice and living in FB’s freshman dorms aren’t too nice at all.

So, there are pros and cons to both, no better decision, but if you really want a single or double and a more traditional campus, go with MV.

agree with rcs249< not many freshman and soph dorms are pretty at FB

Very informative posts - thanks. Sounds like MV is going to be a very appealing option for those lucky enough to get in–

We took our son to see both campuses earlier this month. I think he is torn as both have advantages.

One factor to be considered is that according to two students we spoke with who live on the Vern (our tour guides), it is predominantly freshmen who live there. Perhaps Pelham will change things a bit, but they said that few sophomores, and virtually no upperclassmen, live on the Vern. They loved living there as freshmen, but are moving to FB next year. Their point was that anyone wanting to have the Vern experience should do it right up-front because few students start at FB and then move to the Vern.

The previous poster is absolutely right. The Vern is primarily a freshman experience. I’m a curreny junior and know of no one who is a junior or senior and lives on the Vern. I also think there a very very few sophomores who live there. I don’t think Pelham will change this much as the main drawback of the Vern is you have to take the shuttle and as you gain seniority the dorms in FB get much nicer.

I think the Vern is great for freshman since it eases the transition to college (and city) life without completely removing you from the benefits of GW. Many students will still come to FB on Thr/Fri nights and during the weekends. Not to mention the freshman housing on FB is, in my opinion, pretty disgusting.
