Hello, I was wondering where I should live freshman year. Thanks for the input!

You may not have much of a choice. For the standard housing, they will assign you to a residence hall, and I don’t think they ask for your preference. (You will, though, get to state your preference regarding neat roommate, early riser, night owl.) If you don’t want to go the random residence hall assignment route, you can apply to live in one of the numerous programmed/themed housing arrangements. Guitar, Greenhouse, Wilderness, Poetry, Theater, Tea and Coffee, Integrated First Year, Criminal Minds, Chinese, etc.

Honors College students live in University Heights North; Greenhouse is currently in University Heights South. They’re the newest residence halls on campus and are beautiful. Right next door is the Living/Learning Center which houses a bunch of (the vast majority of??) the programmed housing. This area is especially nice because of its location - convenient to the Student Center and academic buildings, in the other direction close to the music building and athletic facilities, across the strip from one of the all-you-can-eat dining facilities, and two funkier eateries (University Marche and Alice’s Cafe) are right in the Living/Learning Center building. I believe they save a certain number of spots for incoming freshmen and you need to apply and be offered a spot, but if interested you can apply to more than one program.

The Living/Learning Center consists of all suite-type accommodations with a combination of single and double rooms sharing a bathroom. If you think you might like the programmed housing, take a look at http://www.uvm.edu/llcenter/programs/ to see what they have available.

DS is in the Honors College housing in Univ Heights North, and he’s very happy with it. He and his roommate have a decent sized double with a little foyer area and their own private bathroom. The other set-up is for there to be two double rooms with a shared bathroom in between. Ditto for Greenhouse in Univ Heights South.

I think that most of the other residence halls are the traditional corridor-style. It seems that the least desirable halls are the Trinity ones, which are a little ways away from the main campus. They used to be part of Trinity College, and UVM took them over when that college closed. The halls themselves are supposed to be fine, just farther away.

Hope that helps. DS didn’t find out his actual assignment until pretty late in the summer.

Thanks! I will check out the website.
