Hi all, I was recently admitted ED to Duke '21 and was wondering what the housing situation will be like Freshman year. I know we will all be in East campus, but is everyone put into random dorms? How are roommates chosen? Are most rooms doubles/are there any triples(also is there A/C because i’ve heard many different stories about A/C at Duke so i have no idea) Also if anyone can comment on what East campus dorms are generally like, I’d like to know just out of curiosity
All dorms at Duke (both East and West) have A/C, so you don’t have to worry. Some of the older dorms will, however, utilize the portable A/C units that you have to clean out every so often, which can be a mind. Roommates are mostly chosen at random (you feel out a survey), but if you are feeling especially audacious so cautious you can search for roommates on Facebook. If you find yourself incompatible with your roommate - like for instance if he/she sexiles you every week - you can ask for a rehousing assignment from HDRL. I think I only knew one person last year who was in a triple (in Epworth). Blackwell and Randolph are known to have some of the smallest dorms on East that have been likened to prison cells because of their cinder-block walls. However, in general I liked living on East; there was a great sense of community and openness, being all freshmen making our way at Duke.
