Hey! I'm a prospective '10-er and one of the things that really drew me to Reed was the humanities class. I was curious, though-- is the hum class really what the college applications books say it is (tough, demanding, and can possibly suck all the life out of you)?

The humanities class was one thing that drew me to Reed as well. Im still a junior though, so applying next year.

Hum 110: "tough, demanding, and can possibly suck all the life out of you"?

For me it was "tough, demanding, and breathed the life of the mind into me."

It is really equivalent to 4 courses (2 each semester) in its scope and intensity. It is also a rite of passage that all Reedies experience and provides us all -- future musicians, physicists, doctors, farmers, computer scientists, historians, social workers, politicians, city planners, chefs, and lawyers -- with a common language of discourse that is a foundation for the entire Reed experience.

True, at a considerable time remove from the event (I'm an alum from the previous millenium) I romanticize about Hum 110 and the Reed experience generally. There was a lot to read and analyze, and a lot to write -- and there were real deadlines and frequent all-nighters. But IMHO we got out of it as much as we put into it. I wish I could take Hum 110 (and 210) again, not because I have forgotten so much (it's been a long time!) (though I still have my old lecture notes) but because I'm sure I would gain the same excitement from reading the old stuff at this very different stage in my life.

Wow, thanks for the info! :)

And a someone asked the same question, and there are some responses here,
