Freshman Lit major planning to change to Biochem

So I've been having a bit of a personal crisis and I've realized that I'm going to be racking up debt like crazy and a lit major probably won't cut it in terms of job opportunities/repayment of debt. :( So I've decided to switch to biochem (or electrical engineering, compsci, I'm pretty much open to anything right now).

So I guess my major question right now is do I plan my schedule as though I'm already a biochem major or do I have to plan it according to the 4 yr plan for lit majors?

Here's a tentative idea of what I want my schedule to look like:

DOC1 (4)
Chem6A (4)
Math20A (2)
Liten21 (4)
Vis84 (4)

+2 seminars

Is this okay? Also, I have a couple more questions if you don't mind:
a.) Can I make it to Center to York Hall in 10 minutes on a bike? How about York Hall to Solis?
b.) What's the max number of units I can take?
c.) Can I still take Chem 6A even though I didn't take the chem placement exam?
d.) Will Liten21 count as a Humanities GE or do I have to choose for the list the counselors offered at newstudent.ucsd?
e.) Should I pursue biochem or any other majors? (I honestly have no idea at this point.)

Thank you guys for all the help and sorry for such a long winded post. :)

i was planning on taking vis84 too…but i saw somewhere online (cant remember right now…) that the professor is a crazy ■■■■…it seems. and that he plays reaaally weird old movies.

can anyone confirm/refute this?

i think your schedule’s a little too ambitious.
we don’t have a biochem major - it’s either biochem/bio or biochem/chem.

a) yes to both, and you don’t need a bike for either.
b) 22 without petitioning. but i’ve never heard of a petition being denied.
c) yeah
d) it has to be approved by your college. see your college catalog.
e) you should do a major because you’re passionate and interested in it, and seek challenges. doing it just because you think it’ll net you a job is NOT a good idea. you’re going to burn out and you’re not going to have very much fun.

When I read this, I thought “It’s probably professor Gorin they’re talking about” and then I checked the class, and it was him. Ha ha. Yeah, he’s a crazy ■■■■ alright. I had him for VIS 87 and he scared half the class away on the first day. He pretty much just sits there and says “**** this, **** that. You liked the movie Avatar? It was a piece of ****!”. You have a fair warning on this one.

Thanks so much!! While a part of me is balking at the workload, I figure I could always drop the classes if it gets too difficult…

As for following my passions, I figure I can always pursue literature/history as a sort of hobby. A couple of my mom’s acquaintances graduated as lit majors and are having trouble finding jobs so I’m scared to head down that path. :/

And what exactly is the difference between biochem/bio and biochem/chem (so sorry if this is an obvious question >o<)?

have you checked the websites and archives? one’s basically a bio major, the other a chem major.

Alright, will do. Thanks once again for all the aid. I really appreciate it. :)

One final question: how exactly can I change majors and if my request for a major change is not approved, do I have to rework my schedule to fit with the Lit dept’s 4 yr plan?

No, the major changing should be easy as long as you’re trying to change into something non-impacted, which you are. I’m also planning on changing to biochem/chem : )
changing should be as easy as doing the online major change form I think.
