Freshman math class for premed

So I'm majoring in MCB and planning to apply to med school and I need help choosing my freshman math class.

I got a 5 on the AP Calc BC test in 10th grade and took Calc D and intro to Linear algebra in 11th grade. But the problem is I forgot a lot of the stuff by now. So I was thinking about taking 53. Multivariable Calc and 54. Linear Algebra and Differential Equations my freshman year. But how much harder is Honors 53 and 54 and 54M. Cause I was thinking about taking one of though since I did a bit of computer algebra stuff this year.

Also does anyone actually skip Chem 1A even though they got a 5 on the AP test? But I'm planning to take Chem 1A and can someone suggest what physics class I should take? I got a 5 on AP Phy. B and taking AP Phy C Mechanics and E/M this year.

Thanx

u can’t skip any chem if ur premed.

^^Not true for the better schools. Esp. for a science major.

But its really a smart idea to take Chem 1A, since its an ez A plus the concepts you learn, or relearn, are necessary in MCB.

yea I’m pretty sure I’m gonna take Chem 1A.

So any suggestions regarding math class?

Also what’s the minimum # of units that L&S students have to take? 15? What’s the max?

L&S minimum is 13, max is 20.5. Min can be lower with special circumstances. Also note that the way telebears works (new rules) is that once you are registered for 16 units or more, you can’t add any more courses. Thus, sequence the classes you want to add.

Bump…please read my original post and give advice on the math class.

The Honors math classes are very theoretical and proof-heavy. If that interests you, then they might be worth taking. If you are trying to maximize your GPA for med school, I guess you could start fresh with 1A.

If you truly want to maximize your GPA for med school, then you should do the 16 series.

Since you’re planning to be MCB, the minimal math requirements are Math 1A and 1B. In any case, you don’t need 53 and 54 for medical school in the first place. If you really love math, theoretical math to be more precise, then go take 53/54 honors or whatever. The question isn’t really what math you should take, but do you love math more than you love having lots of free time to socialize and play around and still get good grades?

With a 5 on the BC AP exam, the OP doesn’t have to take 1A and 1B. He/she can simply take 16A/16B to satisfy the one year requirement for med schools.

Hmm if I don’t have to take 1A and 1B and still get credit for them, I was actually wondering if it would be a good idea to take a year of stats instead of 16 series. Since medical school recommend stats and I was planning to minor or double major in Econ…

cbhem 1a is not necessarily easy A.

yeah, chem 1a is typically the first of the ‘weeder’ classes a pre-med encounters, so named because it is NOT an easy A for most of the attendees.

it’s an easy B. Like easy. The final killed me. I hate that class forever.

I bet you cringe whenever you read a question asking about paint or soda.

Nah. I cringe when I think about chem 1a and what a waste of a first semester that was all to get a stupid B

hate that class forever got a C…

. . . and these are the satisfied customers speaking. You don’t want to hear from those whose spirits and premed aspirations were crushed forever, or to use the approved term, ‘weeded’.

I really don’t think weeder applies to chem 1a though. it’s like they want you to at least get a C.

I have the same question. I was planning to take 1B in the fall, but med schools require 1 year, so does that mean I would have to take 53 then in the spring? Also, does the 16 series count for MCB/IB major or only 1A/1B?
