Does anyone know when Freshman orientation is this year?
I was trying to look up the date on the calendar and mymit...

Looks as if Orientation begins Aug. 27th. Registration is on Sept. 5, and first day of classes is Sept. 6. (Academic calendar for 2006-2007 is here.)

DO AN FPOP.

just do it.

no. really. take my word for it.

I also gave a rough schedule in a recent blog entry. The Academic Resource Center said they'll be sending a more fleshed-out schedule to freshmen around May 1, at which time they'll also be posting the schedule on their website on May 1.

FPOP...hmm,
Won't that conflict with NROTC "orientation"? Just what do they do for MIT "Pre"-orientation, anyway?

all sorts of things. There are like 20 programs to choose from. I went on the EAPS one to yellowstone (8 days camping) and it was absolutely awesome. One of the best experiences of my life. There are others like Ocean Engineering, some take you out to Maine to look at marine life or something, others show you around Nuclear test facilities. Some for art, some for literature, some for other things, I don't think anyone has ever had a bad experience participating in one of these.

How much do they cost??

the yellowstone one was $150 everything included, I think it ranges somewhere from free to $300.

Enjoy freshie orientation and all of the free food (and no work) while it lasts lol.

oh seriously.. FPOPs are fun...just pick one, any ONE. they're all really good.. and most of them are free :)

What percentage of enrolling students do an FROP?

The Orientation site says about 60%, which sounds right to me.

do they enroll students into those programs as first-come-first-serve, or do they pick after getting everyone's application (for FPOP)?

I think they try to get everyone their first choice, but oversubscribed programs can pick among the candidates.

The application form is here... some programs have serious questions, while others ask things like "Please draw your favorite pirate flag for us and mail it to the Orientation Office." :)

Really, pre-orientation programs are supposed to be fun, with an emphasis on learning fun stuff and meeting your new classmates.

Can internationals do any of the Pre-orientation programmes, cos there is a day overlap between the international orienation and FPOP, so I'm guessin i can't, but thought I'd ask n e ways

From the FPOP FAQ page:
Q: What if I am participating in Interphase or International Orientation?

A: If you are participating in International Orientation or Interphase you will not be able to participate in DEAPS.
I'm under the impression that international orientation is kind of short? Anybody know for sure why they don't conflict with most of the FPOPs?

One thing that sucks, looking over the Orientation site -- you guys have to take the math diagnostic on paper in person; all of the upperclassmen got to take it in the comfort of our homes over the summer. (It's not long or anything. Just annoying, and something you probably won't want to be doing when you get to campus.)
