Freshman Orientation

I'm wondering how Freshman Orientation is for those who have gone. What did you like the most? What did you like the least? What would you do to change it? And, finally, is it worth going to?

I’d like to know this, as well. Also, if your parent/s went, how did they find the parent program?

Just got home from Orientation last night and all went great!

Daughter is absolutely thrilled, and so excited to be attending LMU in the Fall!! She said the Orientation Leaders (upperclassmen) were super nice and she had a great time! She was sure tired last night. She came home with her Fall class schedule, so it all seems very real!!

I also attended and am so, so glad I did. It is really your ONE chance to get a glimpse into what all happens at the school, and the ins and outs of everything. LMU did a great job. The parents had various seminars all day long the first day - I was a bit glazed over by the end of the day (and really looked forward to the dessert and wine reception! :)) as they packed in a ton of information, but it was all very very helpful and insightful. The 2nd day was only a half day for the parents, but still lots of great info (kids finished later, depending on their assigned registration time). I was very impressed with everything!

I would love to hear any student reaction and feedback, as well as any thoughts from other parents.

Also, parents, how were the hotels you stayed at?

We stayed at the Courtyard in Culver City and we were very happy with it. Clean, modern, good beds and sheets, great price (with LMU rate), only $10 per night for parking.

My daughter and I finished orientation late yesterday, the second to last session.

We had a wonderful experience. My daughter really enjoyed the student leaders that worked with her group (one was a rising sophomore) and felt very comfortable on campus. She has decided that she will very likely change her major from business to something else, likely Psychology which her dad and I are fine with. It was recommended that she not rush into the paperwork part of that as Business is impacted and much harder to get into than most of the other majors. Better to take core classes and think about it over the first little while. She registered for classes but needs to get some college credits transferred over which may lead to a change in her schedule. We need to get on that right away.

I am very impressed with FYE, the First Year Experience team and their program. My older girls went to larger schools and didn’t have anything like this. Though all went well for them I do think having this resource can be a significant benefit…if the students take advantage of it.

I was very pleased with the focus on developing the whole person and the idea of education not just for the benefit of the individual but for what they can contribute to the larger community. I had heard this before but felt it even stronger during Orientation. I don’t think my daughter is too concerned about all that at this point but hopefully it will become meaningful to her as the year/years unfold.

I’m SO GLAD I went. This experience made me feel even more comfortable about sending my daughter to LMU! I believe that it is a very good fit for her…even more importantly she does too, though she did say that she is looking forward to moving on campus with the rest of the students when she will have a better feel for what it will really be like. In her mind she is ready to start NOW! I’m glad I have the summer to enjoy having her around a bit longer. She is my last and I’m not in a hurry to join the ranks of the empty nesters. : )

Any updates from current freshman kids or patents, please post.
