LMU Orientation

Hi All, we are attending one of the last sessions of orientation, and wondered what your thoughts were...what did you do at the orientation, what did you find most helpful, any advice? Please let us know, we are curious!!!

isnt there only one orientation for transfers?

Not transfers, but I thought it was well done. I went to everything on the agenda. Great speakers, very personalized attention.

Only waste was a student led tour, which I bailed on and went to the disability office instead.

Son seemed pleased with the student portion, and connected with a good number of kids he met.

@Shrinkwrap - which sessions for parents do you highly recommend? Time is limited, so may only choose a few…what do you think?

Any tips for students on the class registration process? Son is not graduating until Tuesday so we are signed up for the last Orientation session which is Thursday and Friday of this week.

"@Shrinkwrap - which sessions for parents do you highly recommend? Time is limited, so may only choose a few…what do you think? "

I’ll have to look over the agenda when I get home. They gave a copy of just about all the power point slides, and that has been really helpful.

What I’m thinking about right now is how all the student account stuff works, i.e. payment plans. I think the first payment for the 5 payment/smester plan may be coming up shortly.

I was also very pleased with the opportunity to lunch with the deans of the schools, and was blown away that they knew my sons name ( although I guess it wasn’t THAT hard to figure out). Son said he was pretty much told what to register for, inlcuding an 8 AM class two days a week, and classes Friday. No way my D ( a rising college senior) would have gone for that!. He doesn’t get too many choices. I am under the impression they hold classes for kids in the last sessions to make it fair.

The session on “everything else” (but academics) was helpful and entertaining. Stuff about meal plans, and points, and housing, and IT.

My tour was a waste, as was the stuff about finanical aid if you are not eligible for financial aid. But that session also included stuff about Jesuit philosophies and career planning.

Thanks Shrinkrap for all the great info! How long did the dinner on Day 1 last? The Orientation schedule on line says its for both students and parents starting at 5-sounds like we eat with our students? The students have their next activity at 6:30. Is it a safe assumption that the parents will be done at 6:30? I am meeting up with some Manhattan Beach friends and am trying to figure out timing.

Dinner does start early, at 5:00, and yes, it will be done at 6:30, because they have more planned events on the schedule for the students, going almost until midnight! Dinner is not mandatory for parents - some go, some don’t. If they don’t, the kids usually eat with their “orientation group” they’re assigned to. It’s all very flexible, and the parents can pick and choose what they want to do. Having just come back, here’s a couple of suggestions - students are outside a good part of both days, if it’s sunny and hot, bring
sunscreen. 1st day, they have continental breakfast - fruit, bagels, muffins, juice, coffee, if you don’t get time to eat a big breakfast. Remind your kid to sign the FERPA form, which gives the school permission to contact you for any reason regarding grades, sickness, any problems. If they don’t sign, they will not contact you in any situation, i.e. your kid goes to the hospital. Good luck!!!

"Is it a safe assumption that the parents will be done at 6:30? "

Yes. And you could skip it, but it was fun to touch bases

Just two weeks ago it was chilly and we were SO happy to glimpse the sun! (“June gloom” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_Gloom</a>)
