Freshman Parking

Can anyone tell me if Freshman can keep their cars on campus ? I have received conflicting info.. thanks !

Yes you can, but if you don’t need a car in order to get to a job, I wouldn’t recommend it. Some of the parking lots are far away from the dorms, and the permits are very expensive.

Yes, freshmen can have a car on campus. We let our D bring a car during Winter Session for specific family reasons, and then decided to let her keep it on campus for Spring session for the same reasons. Unless you have a special reason to need a car it’s not at all necessary. These days she mostly uses it occassionally to go with friends to the supermarket or mall or give them a lift to the Wilmington bus station (since there are few trains into Newark). I’d certainly wait if I were you until Winter Session.

A word of warning about location… D has a freshman friend who resides in Harrington on East Campus. She brought her car her campus the first time after spring break. The closest parking spot? The stadium! D says her friend used it once to drive them to the mall, and they had to walk the 20+ minutes each way to the stadium. IMO the bus would have made more sense. Agree with other postings that a car is almost always not necessary, and is probably in most cases an unmerited expense.

FWIW, my D has never complained about the location of the two spots she’s been given, and thought they were reasonably close. It may be that if you first sign up for a spot in the Spring Semester, most of the closer spots have already been allocated earlier in the year.

I would think that there are ample busses going regularly to the stadium and other sports complexs?

Thank you all ! Can anyone tell me approximatley how much the parking permits are ?

LOL, that’s a surprizingly complex question:

(I think Gold is only for Commuters, not campus residents)

Thank you so much - this link was so helpful !

Yes - my DD’s friend has a car on campus and drove DD to the Wilmington Amtrak before the last break. She has a spot for her car down at the Field House, so they just jump on the UD shuttle from Laird to get to the car. It’s not a big deal.

My D kept a (really cheap) bicycle for quick trips to the stadium. She had some classes at the Ag center, so the bike wasn’t entirely for access to freshman parking there.

Yes, my D also has a clunker of a bike too (barely needs a lock at all), handy to have on a flat campus in a flat town with mostly good weather.

UD senior here. I have to counter everyone else on here, I have had a car on campus all 4 years and I think it is very nice to have. While not necessary by any means, it is nice to be able to drive to drive town around for errands (supermarket, kmart, mall) and also nice to be able to make your own trips home without relying on others.

In terms of parking location, the people warning about spots at the stadium likely applied for permits after the beginning of fall semester. Apply before classes begin and you’ll have a spot within relatively easy walking distance of your dorm. The longer you wait after the start of the academic year, the more likely you will be assigned to south campus.
