Can freshmen have cars on campus? I plan to drive home on weekends. (I live about 40 mins away.) Also, can any current student tell me the upsides and downsides of parking on campus?

Freshmen can have cars on campus. You just have to purchase a permit,

Pros: You have a car on campus.
Cons: It's expensive, and freshman parking isn't exactly close (Comcast center garage)

saftey for you car isnt exactly great either

How often do we have to remove the cars for games?

on average, weekly during basketball season. i have friends who park there and they say its such a pain.

why are you planning on going home every weekend, anyway? stay on campus and hang out with your friends.

Is security really all that bad?

I'm going to be taking a new car to campus.

would it be really hard for someone to commute everyday from baltimore, which is about a 35 minute drive?....cuz thats what im planning on doing to save some money

^ probably
you'd probably be late a lot because of traffic

groovinhard, there is no parking security, per se. i assume if a campus cop is around and sees someone messing with a car, they'd do something about it. but none of the parking lots have security guards or anything. my neighbor has a fairly new BMW and hasn't had any problems when he's parked on campus.

hoodhopper, if you schedule your classes starting later (12ish) and ending after rush hour, and try to get all MWF classes, traffic wouldn't really be a problem plus you'd only have to commute 3 days a week instead of 5.

i'm sure you've already thought of that, but it would make commuting a bit easier.

hoodhopper - if you have to drive the outer loop west side of 695 commuting is very difficult unless you leave before 6:30Am or after 9AM - likewise the after inner loop is horrible between 4PM and 6PM. 95S always seems to be backed up when I pass it between 8 and 8:30Am. If you have a different route it might not be so bad.

It takes more like an hour from baltimore, UMBC is 35 minutes..

i drove to college park from baltimore (more specifically, towson) yesterday and it took me 40 minutes. with traffic, it'd probably take closer to an hour.

hoodhopper, i don't think it would be hard to commute everyday assuming that you don't mind moderately long car rides.
