I'm an entering Freshman in Fall 2011 and planning on double majoring in Political Science and Haas or Econs. Below is what I plan to take for my first semester.

Phase 1:
Math 16A/1A (Still deciding which one to take)
UGBA 10
PoliSci 5

Phase 2:
History 7A
Maybe Freshman Seminar (ESPM 24, NE STUD 024)--> Not going to CALSO so probably not going to get into any seminars

Alternates:
Pol Sci 1 or 3 (As an alternate to POL SCI 5)
Econ 1 (as Alternate to UGBA 10)

First of all, how easy/hard is this course load? Also I'm not really worried on doing well in 1A but am worried about 1B, so is it possible to take 1A and then 16B? I've taken Business and Management before (at IB SL) so will that help with UGBA 10. Finally, I haven't fulfilled the Entry Level Writing Requirement and am OOS so I may have to take the test in September, which is why I haven't enrolled in any R&C classes.

Thanks for all the help.

No AP credit?

Math 1A/1B/53/54 is needed for the Economics major with more math (with Economics 101A/101B/141). Math 16A/16B or 1A/1B is needed for the Economics major with less math (with Economics 100A/100B/140) or the Business major (none of whose courses actually list more than one semester of calculus as a prerequisite).

If you do not have AP Calculus credit, see this page for choosing a math course (including on-line placement quiz):

If you do have AP Calculus credit, see these pages for choosing a math course (the Engineering one has Math 1A and 1B final exams to try out):

I’m doing a Full IB Diploma (thus the absence of APs), but in Math SL, I’ve done some Calculus including Integration and Differentiation and their Application.

Trying those Math 1A and 1B final exams should give you a good idea of where you stand. For actual credit and prerequisite purposes, contact the Math, Business, and Economics departments directly.

IB Math SL is pretty useless, you only learn the basics of calculus that gets covered in less than a lecture in Math 1A/B and you do not get to place out of 1A/B. Doing well on the Math SL (i.e. getting a 7) should not be in any way construed as an indication of your future performance in Math 1A/B. Conversely, a poor score (anything less than a 7 imo) would suggest that you would be well-advised to take Math 16A instead.

That said, calculus is all about practice and you just need to invest the time to work on questions from the textbook/past exams. The difficulty/harshness of the curve in Math 1A/B also tends to be unfairly emphasized. CourseRank and myEdu both show an approximate average of about 30% As in these 2 classes which I think is fairly generous. Grade curves (like in most other classes) are also prof dependent with profs like Borcherds and Aganagic having a reputation for being easier graders. I would argue that hard work alone is enough to guarantee a decent grade in lower division math.

If you’re thinking of double majoring in PS and Business/Econ, perhaps 16A would be a better choice. PS as a second major suggests you might be more comfortable with the less math intensive Econ classes.
