Freshman Schedule for possibly pre-haas or economics major

Econ 1 (4 units)
History 005 (4 units)
IAS 45 (4 units)
Math 16A (3 units)

This is a total of 15 units. Is this a manageable course load for my first semester or should I choose some other courses? If so, which ones would you recommend? My interests are history, political science, economics and business. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

That looks like a good schedule. Both history 5 and IAS 45 have very high grade distributions on CourseRank, so you should be fine.

One thing to note is that both IAS 45 and History 5 fall into the same L&S/Haas breadth categories (Historical and Social/Behavioral), one of which is the same as Economics 1 (Social/Behavioral, if you do not end up majoring in Business). This is not necessarily bad if you are interested in the subjects, but if you are trying to cover more breadth categories early to make your schedule less restrictive later, you may want to try covering more breadth categories early.

Also make a list of alternate courses that you are willing to take in case some of your first choice courses are too full. Keep an eye on the on-line schedule to see which courses are filling up so that you have at least some “safety” courses.

No AP credit?

I got a 4 on the us history exam, i’m still waiting on the micro and macro exams. I didn’t take many ap courses because my school doesn’t offer a lot.

If you get 5 on both AP Economics tests, you can skip Economics 1 for Haas purposes (4 on both allows skipping it for Economics major purposes and presumably for taking additional Economics courses). If you think you may get a 5, you may want to substitute some other course (e.g. UGBA 10, R&C, or breadth) in its place.

AP US History gives nothing but generic units, unless you need it for the American History and Institutions requirement (that most people fulfill with regular high school courses in those areas).

If you aren’t going to take econ1, I’d hold off on ugba10 as well. Its just not worth it considering its your first semester and you’re still getting use to college. Take it second semester.
