what exactly are the policies to take 4 classes + seminars?
for the time being, i am pre-med and am highly interested in anthropology as a possible major.

my schedule would include gen chem 101-2-3, multivariable 230, and fundalmentals of anthro 105. yet i also want to continue my brief three years of spanish. what are the rigors of this additional spanish class? is intermediate spanish generally considered a tough class?

i can switch mutli with spanish, but i fear of losing the necessary skills by taking a year off in either course. legit concern?

a question regarding pre-med scheduling, do students usually go chem-frosh/bio-soph/o-chem/junior/physics-senior? after doing some research on CC's pre-med forums, i have come to believe physics is the least necessary and easiest science on the MCAT. or do many students double up? what are the most popular doubling up combinations at NU?

Fall quarter you simply cannot take more than 4 classes. To take 5 classes in winter and/or spring as a freshman, you must have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

Also, almost all pre-meds go Inorganic-> Orgo-> Bio+ Physics (junior year). I don’t know this, but I get the feeling you must complete the requirements before applying to med-school, and thus before Senior year.

Answer I received from WCAS advising by email:

The normal load for any WCAS student is 4 courses per quarter.

A first-quarter freshman should register for four classes, including the freshman seminar. There’s no difference for a pre-med student.

Most pre-med students in their first quarter are doing:

1 freshman seminar
1 science for pre-med (such as gen chem or organic chem, depending on
placement)
1 math for pre-med, depending on placement and AP scores
1 distribution course or major exploration course

interesting…i guess i have to take multivariable, at least during for the fall quarter. to fulfill my one year of calculus, can someone point me towards the appropriate sequence (derivative multi, integral mutli, ____?)

i’m just concerned about my losing the spanish progress i have made in high school. btw, i live in california so learning spanish is essential in my opinion. if it’s not to much to ask, can someone explain the language sequences? does it matter if i take the first two courses during winter/spring and then the third during the beginning of soph year?

The language sequences are designed for a full year (ie intermediate spanish would be 102/125-1 for fall, 102/125-2 for winter, 1-2/125-3 for spring). The number has changed since I took it (it was 102 last year) but the class should be the same.

Unfortunately, the way the sequence are laid out, you can’t begin the sequence mid year. Same applies for inorganic chem and orgo i believe, but I can’t say for sure.

so as a freshman premed, we don’t have room to take a language? if we don’t demonstrate proficiency through placement tests, then do we have to take languages in a later year? Or do you reccomend that we don’t take distro requirement (like some random history or something) and instead take a language our freshman year? Can you take a lang class during summer?

Unless you can place out of a language, it is probably a better idea to take the language in the Freshman and Sophmore years. As the years progress and the courses get harder, you probably won’t want to try and squeeze in a language requirement because it is sequenced and must be started in the fall.

spanish is not the most challenging of courses if u take the right teacher. I would save it for sophomore year when u’ll probably be taking bio 210 and orgo (suck because of lab time - 8 hours)
