I am a rising freshman CV scholar at Vanderbilt and was wondering whether this schedule seems appropriate.

Chem 102A w/ lab

Bio 111A w/ lab

Math 170 (single variable calculus)

Spanish 201W (intermediate Spanish writing)

Honors seminar on Happiness (Hons 181), counts as writing seminar

You might be looking at this and thinking I am crazy but hear me out. I have taken AP Chemistry, AP Biology, and AP Spanish in high school and have gotten 5s on all of them. Both chem and bio should be repeats and I purposely placed myself into a lower level Spanish class to sort of make it an easier A. That being said, theoretically, Math 170 and the honors seminar should be the major challenges as the information will be completely new. I want to take math 170 to ensure I don't forget my calc from high school and take the honors seminar to be done with the freshman writing requirement.

Does this schedule sound feasible having said all of that?

I think the schedule is doable. It seems like you have thought out your schedule in order to make every class count. That being said, fall of freshman year is all about adjustment to college and it may be stressful at times trying to balance 15 hours of serious coursework with everything else that is going on. Undoubtedly, you’re going to have be efficient (and work diligently) in order to do well. It may be prudent to drop 3 hours (probably the Honors Seminar or Spanish because Math 170 is not offered in the spring) to be on the safe side (although you can wait to the add drop period to do this).

Also, note that Phil Crooke teaches Math 170 in the fall and therefore, I think it should be pretty straightforward if you study.

Bump.

And also, I meant to say math 175 (multivar), not math 170. Any input would be appreciated.

S made a 5 on the AP biology exam. In fact, he was so confident that he predicted his score after the AP test. He took the biology class his second semester there and found it to be a strenuous class.

Bio and Chem simaltaneously will be quite a challenge, even if you are smart enough to handle all the concepts being thrown at you. In my experience, both of these classes are simply a lot of busy work (particularly Alex, a computer homework program required in clemistry). Additionally, you will be required to take a language placement test for any spanish class offered. If you dont plan on continuing spanish past the required one semester, it might be worth considering seriously taking a lower class (spanish 103 is a 5 credit hour class that is far easier than the 3 credit hour 201w). However, you will need to “preform poorly” on the placement test. I advise doing so with your already difficult schedule.

That a lot of hours and a tough course load. Suit yourself.

I would just ask, what’s the rush? Why push yourself so hard?
