My first choice freshman seminar is in the spring term. However, another seminar I would really enjoy pursuing is in the fall. If I apply for my second favorite seminar, the one in the fall, and am placed in a fall seminar, will this reduce the likelihood of my being placed in my first choice spring seminar when I apply for that? I'm guessing that it would as people who skip the fall seminars would be given preference if they apply in the spring? If this is the case, I'd prefer to wait until I can apply for the spring seminar to increase the odds of getting into my first choice seminar.

Also, when applying to the seminars, do we just dedicate a paragraph to explaining our interest in each of the 3 top choices we have indicated (in the essay)? Do we have to attend a freshman seminar if we are assigned to one (for example, hypothetically, if assigned to my third choice, I may prefer not to attend)?

Sorry if my questions seem somewhat convoluted but any insight would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you in advance for any advice!

You don’t need to apply for a FRS in your RC. All that refers to is where the seminar is held — each of the residential colleges have seminar rooms.

Other question is interesting. I don’t know how it would be looked upon if you applied for a fall seminar, got in, then declined, and then tried for a spring one. I’m also not sure if you can take more than one - I’m thinking you can’t. You definitely do not need to accept a FRS if you don’t really want to take that one — but ofcourse it’s hard to know what will happen in the spring … it’s a bit of a risk.

Some people take seminars both terms; you are certainly allowed to do that. I believe priority in the spring goes to those who have not taken seminars in the fall.

On the other hand, it may be worth risking not getting into the spring one by applying to the fall one only, rather than risking not getting into any. It is not at all a guarantee that you will get into your top choice; far from it.

@Chairman:The seminars are optional; assessments and work depend on the seminar.

what’s the point of doing them? Are they purely for fun? Cause I’d imagine i’ll be so busy with courses that I wouldn’t do any more than what I have to.

they count as a course and can fulfill a GE, i think?

and has anyone been able to access the online app for freshmen seminars? i always get a thing saying that my peer’s certificate has been revoked.

My D got the booklet with all the FRS listings (the same as online, BTW). There is an introduction that talks about Freshman Seminars (FRS) and Writing Seminars and how freshmen should take both, but the booklet only lists the Freshman Seminars. Should my D be looking to enroll in a writing seminar on this page:

…in ADDITION to the FRS? She’s on a summer school expedition, so she won’t be able to look at this until she returns, so I’m trying to get some clarity for her before that.

^^^My understanding is that each Freshman will be told whether s/he must take her/his Writing Seminar in the Fall or Spring. Then one can use the link provided to sign up. The How to Enroll link has more info. Note that the on-line Writing Seminar info. currently is for 2009, not 2010-2011.

FRS and Writing Seminar are completely different, but can be taken in the same semester. The FRS document encourages students to take them in the same semester, but that is not a requirement.

I will wait until I get my writing seminar assignment, and then decide if I’ll apply for a fall or spring freshman seminar. I don’t want to apply for a fall seminar, get in, and then find out I was also assigned to a fall writing seminar. My schedule wouldn’t allow for that.

to any current pton students who have taken a frosh seminar: what are some of the easiest ones / have an easy professor teaching them? I saw one that has 4 oral reports and 4 written reports, and i was like sheesh…anything that will be less work?

@ op. was the second semester seminar you wanted so badly the motorcycle one? b/c i would give my right arm to do that one. . .i really hope nobody else wants to do it :P
