Fall Freshman Seminar

We must apply to freshman seminars by August 12, right? And we choose courses and writing seminars in orientation week, right?
When do we find out in which Freshman seminars we've been assigned?

Only two freshman seminars really are to my liking. Can I list just these two? So in case I'm not admitted in one of these two FRS I can choose a course rather than a third FRS?

Yeah you can list just two. If you want to list one, that's OK too.

Even if you list 4 and get into your 3rd, you're not obligated to do it. But yea, you should list only 2 if you're only interested in two.

Two questions:

1) We can decline to enroll in the seminar even if we're accepted to, it was our first choice and everyone wanted to take it, right?
2) We don't have to write the second essay if we really don't want to, right?

:D

LOL gia I don't think either is illegal but I think you'd have to be pretty brave to do the second :p

You're not bound to take the seminars, even if you get into your first choice. You don't HAVE to write ANY essays if you're really brave.

huh? :p If you don't get in... :shrugs:

Well the profs choose you based on those essays so the only reason you would get in without writing an essay is if not enough people applied and they need people to fill up the class.

So you should only do that if you don't really want your second choice...?

If you submit it online, will the professors see: "Second Choice Essay for Person X" then a huge blank page? Or will they just see - "Applicant # 10, Person X" and then see there's no essay? Or will the online form not allow you to NOT submit a second essay - like it will say, "Error, text missing for Essay 2"?

sigh last year the second essay was optional! And the year before that you probably didn't have to do any essays at all! :(

Yea but Freshman seminars are becoming more popular aren't they? I mean, why else would they ask for 3rd and 4th choices if everyone got their first 2?

I have no idea what it would say on the app they receive, but you can probably submit without an essay (technically, I mean)

Yeah, especially since you submit your 3rd and 4th choices without an essay. I wonder if professors get slightly offended if they see their seminar was your 4th choice! :p

I guess there's no need to write the second essay because if it's not my first choice sem, then I don't really want to take it anyway.

Then don't even bother putting a 2nd choice. That way they will feel bad for you come 2nd semester if you want to take one then, instead of feeling like you "rejected" the 2nd choice given to you.

Does it ever happen where someone doesn't get a seminar at all, even if they wrote down 4 choices? What if all four are popular?

Good thinking zant.
I am sure that does happen occasionally. Imagine if the person picks that year's top 4 seminars and their first two essays aren't that good... They could easily end up not taking one, though maybe they tell professors to give first choice to people if it's their fourth choice seminar because it means they didn't get into any of the others so it's their last chance, you know. :)

Who knows? I'll just keep my fingers crossed for #1, and start looking for a backup course in case none of them works out.
What's your #1 choice, gia?

nothing's due the 12th if you want a spring seminar, right?

Right. 10.

Spring seminar applications are in November.
