Freshman session

Hey! It would be great if someone can take a look at my schedule for the summer freshman session =) i have three intended majors in mind: pre-business/PEIS/ poli sci specifically intl relations.

It says I should pick two courses but I have three in mind (just in case):
French 1
Stat 21
Math 16A

1) How time consuming is French 1? I didn't take french as my foreign language in high school

2) is taking stat 21 and math 16a together a good idea?

I would need good grades for both stat 21 and math 16a as they are prereqs for haas and i heard the courses in summer session advances pretty quickly. I take IB Math SL if it helps but it's not my best subject.

Any insight/advices are welcomed! Thanks in advance

three classes? i dunno. im taking english 1NA and chem 1A and that seems like more than enough given the amount of work that chem has!

Taking math 16a and stats 21 will probably be your best choice. If you want to take a language, you should take it during the school year because the longer exposure to the language might help you retain it better after you finish the class.

Stats 21’s material isn’t too hard, but the tests tend to be quite difficult, at least they tend to be during the fall and spring semesters. Are you only taking Math SL? I took Math SL 2 years ago and the class didn’t have too much calculus but, of course, the test might have changed or your teacher might have taught you stuff beyond the scope of the exam. If you haven’t been exposed to too much calculus yet then you should be prepared to do some studying. Once again, I don’t think the class material itself is too difficult but most Berkeley students come in with quite a bit calculus experience :(.

Once again, the combo isn’t too difficult but be prepared to do a bit of math work over the summer if you plan on taking both.

Yeah…I don’t recommend taking a foreign language during summer, especially since you have never been taught a foreign language before (I’m assuming here, excuse me if I’m wrong) and don’t know what to except. Since it’s summer session, the pacing will be different!

thanks for the awesome advices!

do you guys recommend me taking a math course and then say a breadth course? (at the top of my head i’m thinking sociology 3ac)

do summer classes count towards your UCB gpa? Does it matter if I’m a spring admit enrolled in FPF? I want to take math 1A over again even though i’m probably going to get credit for it through AP Calc so I’m still ahead.

^Summer session goes into your UC GPA.

BTW just wondering, why are taking Math 1A (i.e. what is your major)

I’m in the CoE but I want to maintain a solid GPA early so skipping the easy Math classes doesn’t really appeal to me even if I’m bored out of my mind. I’d rather play it safe.

Good point, but keep in mind Berkeley math is a lot tougher than HS math.

haha exactly why I’m going to start fresh. would taking another class, say physics 7A be suicide? during the summer session.
