Hey wat about IRC...i mean howz it? social life, peers?? and convenience??

I live in the IRC as a first year but I would suggest going for the traditional first year experience (Old or New Dorms) during your first year. Thats just personal opinion though...

why do u think so...i mean there must be some reasons for this personal view of urs?

AND I NEED TO understand what are old dorms and what are the new ones...being an international i do not really know?

Old - McCormick
New - Alderman

okay...i got that before...but a FRESHMAN..AN INTERNATIONAL NOT IN IRC..I MEAN THERE MAYBE SOME REASONS

"living at Brown meant social death"

to a lot of people, it is. to others, it's the opposite. it;s got a bad stigma tho.

Be WARNED if you're going to live in the OLD DORMS: you will be surrounded by sorority girls who wear pearl earrings, pearl necklaces and granny looking handbags with their ohh "I'm soo from izzy deezee delta zeta!! what are you pledging?" tone, and also frat guys who just starting drinking on thursdays till the end of the weekend, coming home knocking and thorwing stuff on your doors.

What's so bad about that? Brown could have a nice little warning written about it, too. Not to knock it or anything - I might yet apply there.

Hy cld anyone tell me how wld it for an international freshman at the IRC?

You'd meet people of all years from all over the world. But as an international student coming to study in America, wouldn't you want to live amongst American students?

Yea i wld like to live wid the Americans....but i heard there are lot of americans too in the IRC...including freshman..

There are and there aren't. Personally, I think living in McCormick or Alderman would give you a better all-around first year experience. You'd be around hundreds of people your age, and it would be a great place to start from. You'll probably be here 4 years, so you'll have plenty of time to sample other living arrangements.

Even i wanted to go to Alderman at he first place ...but dont know why i filled up IRC....Now i have already applied for housing
...is it possible to change....????

Cavalier302: I personally don't like it when people throw stuff or shout in front of your doors when you're sleeping on Thursday night or something. And the Old dorms is a warning to those who don't like the Greek scene and I didn't say anything bad about it. It's just that some people are annoyed by it :)

manuj_pro: Yes, there are about 50% Americans who live in the IRC. So I don't think you should be insisting to want to live in Old or New Dorms because frankly speaking, there is a good number of Americans in the IRC. A better all-round first year experience does not necessarily mean living in first-year dorms. I for one would not have liked to live in the first-year dorms because Brown has such an eclectic mix of people and it's fun to live here, where it is arguably the only liberal dorm in the conservative setting of UVA.

tenniscraze, I don't think it's that bad. It's not like Brownies never party...

manuj_pro, you can still change if you want to. Just contact the housing office and let them know you'd like to switch. You've probably got a couple of weeks to think about it, though.

Hmm since when have I ever thought that you think living in Brown is bad at all? I think in fact it's the best place to live because everyone is just so friendly - as opposed to first-years in old dorms where the conversation becomes not, "What activities are you interested in?" but rather, "What sorority/fraternity are you pledging?"

No no I mean that I don't think that old dorms are that bad. Brown's fine. And I don't like your stereotyping of old dorms. You know the whole party line about stereotypes and yada yada yada. People can be deeper than they appear if you give them the chance.

Even I applied to IRC taking in consideration the fact that there are Americans there and also intls...that wld help me adjust better....i know it mite not be all that first year experience but there are alwys pros and cons of everything...but what i wanna know is...whether there are american first years in the IRC?? I know there wld be a loads of people there frm Korea, China and South Asia

There certainly are americans there. But by number and by percentage, there won't be as many first year americans as in the other housing arrangements. Clearly, both have their pro's and con's. Whether you value the pro's of one or avoiding the con's of another is something you need to decide for yourself.
