Freshman w/ 17 hrs and a job.

Alright these are my classes
French I - 5 hours
Playwriting I - 3 hrs
Sociology - 3 hrs
UGS "Thinking about Thinking"

I'm interviewing for a job tomorrow that runs 12-14 hours a week.

Even if I don't get this job, is it too much to take?

I started school at UT in the summer - and 6 hours seemed like a bit much but I know it was also only five weeks long vs a full out semester.

Is it do-able?

:o

I'm so mad I can't drop the UGS class because it would kick me out of Sociology and the TIP program that I'm in. :(

you’re screwed

I still have time to make changes haha

Well take what I say with a grain of salt, but I’m a freshman too and I’ve been told that its not a good idea to load up on hours and jobs right away during your first semester. If you wanted to have such a busy schedule, it might be beneficial to wait until the second semester when you’re kinda used to the whole college vibe and routine so that you can manage your time more efficiently.

I would advise dropping the job and post phoning it till next semester or even next year if you feel you aren’t ready by next semester. Or take a lighter courseload next semester and then get that job. 15credits and a regular job seems doable from my perspective but ask around, especially upperclassmen who have been through it.

I’m a junior and I second WastedxYears. I’ve never held a job while in school but I know a few people who have and they hated it. They never had time to do anything else and they were constantly swamped with school work and work. Think about when you have a big exam and the day before you’re working the night shift - scary right? One of my friends not only works part-time at a retail store, she also has physical therapy and classes to worry about. Right now she’s holding down a 2.5ish gpa. Unfortunately her parents are making her work because she chose to take her car and they are holding her responsible for all the costs. She’s really unhappy to say the least and her grades suffer from it. Learn from that and don’t get a job unless you think you’ll still be happy with a low gpa.

It’s really up to you. Do you think you can handle it?

You could definitely handle it. 17 hours might seem alot in numbers but your French class is 5 hours so thats why.

Uh are you missing a class because that doesn’t add up to 17 credits. Unless UGS has suddenly become a 6 credit class.

^Haha, I was about to say something about that, but I didn’t want to embarrass myself in case I missed something obvious.

lol i forgot to add the one class that actually put my schedule to 17. i ended up going down to 15 and sailing through.

maybe ill do 17 in the spring if i can handle it.

thanks for all yalls input!

no, do not do that. no time for free time.

hmm … I guess I’m going to be the contrarian on this thread … I do not know the typical course load at UT but at the schools I’ve attended a lot of students (about 1/2) took 5 courses at a time … and a ton of students worked 8-15 hours a week (including virtually all students on FA who have work study components to their aid).

yeah xtra.

i treasure my free time and sleep. well, same thing sorta. lol
