? for people who've worked

How many hours a week did you work? How many units were you taking? What kind of work was it?

I'm considering working around 20 hours with a 16 unit schedule next semester, but I'm afraid it might be a little overwhelming.

20 hr/week

To play it safe, go minimal.

~26 hrs/week at a fast food joint with 20 unit schedule (physics, calculus, chem, C++, circuits).

Hmm... not bad. What was your guys' GPA at the end of the semester? Were most of your working hours on the weekend and days you didn't go to class?

And any tips on how to actually land a job? It seems like every listing on craigslist wants previous experience, even if it's just like cash register.

that's crazy, wiki.
taking 12 units / 15 units, mostly humanities & lib art classes, i worked 20-25 hrs/week.
because of the reading in analytical philosophy classes, and attempting to keep social on weekend nights, my schedule was pretty packed.
on the up side, it's really easy to save money when all you do outside of work is study.

25-30 hours a week. i worked at a clothing store the last 2 semesters. 18 units, 4.0.

this semester is different. i worked at a campaign. i have 20 units. 4 definite A's and 2 probable B's.

sleeper, i think you'll be fine. just don't do what i did; it's extremely tiring.

Any tips though on how to land any job? I've never had one before, but I realized next semester might be a good opportunity to save up some money.

fill out an application...
then call back every few days to check up on it.
if making the most money for your time is not imperative (since you've never had a job, i assume it's not), i'd suggest getting involved with something related to what you plan to study. looks good on applications, and the learning is invaluable.
working as a waiter for three years, i made plenty of money by being a miserable slave.
working as an intern at a law firm for three months, i've gained invaluable experience and insight, but make no money.
find a happy medium and learn through it.

Go to your school's career center, if they have one. But other than that, apply at various places, ask your friends if their workplaces are hiring...be persistent, but not too much. Be willing to take a crap job at first.

34-40 hours with 15 units. Manageable.

16 hours a week, 15-17 units per semester, easy peasy as long as you use time management!

I worked 40 + hours a week at Aetna Us Healthcare and Life insurance.

I took 12 units (always with online courses otherwise i took less)

36 hours per week and 17 semester units...
cuz i have to support myself...
but it is manageable...

Doesn't it kinda make you laugh at all those schools that have a unit "limit"? It's like high school all over again.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback and advice. I probably will get some sort of slavish job my first time, but I'm fine with it. I actually think the career center at my school would be a good start since they'll help me get my foot in the door.

At one point I worked 40 hours/week while taking 15 units.

This summer I took 6 units and worked 40hours.

That's impressive. What kinda work is it? Labor? White-collar? And did you have any time to squeeze in some ECs?

i have two jobs this quarter, totaling 36 hours/week

i was taking 16 units, but i had to drop my real analysis (math) class

i go to ucsd, and i'm trying to transfer to ucb or ucla

Interning for Hedge Fund / Interning for a health insurance company working in their accounting division.

Yes, I had time to squeeze in E/C's and volunteering. It was tough though, but it is doable.

I think it also depends on what type of job: Is it a job at which you can have down-time and study? At my last job, I sometimes could do my online coursework while I was working... which was cool.

20 hrs of work, 12 units at school, and spent 20 hours on an athletic team. Still had time for campus involvement and going out. Just gotta force yourself to not waste time.
