Freshman Writing

How likely is it for Freshmen to get the writing class they want? There is one particular section that my daughter is dying to take, but it has a cap of 15. I still don't understand the registration process completely so I'm not sure what to expect.

Freshmen will receive registration information in June (or maybe July. I forget exactly when) and approx 1-2 weeks later on-line registration will open. If your D is quick about hopping online as soon as online registration begins, she probably won’t have an issue getting into it.

If the class closes before she has a chance to sign up for it, she has 2 options.

1) ask to be put on the waitlist for the class (she’ll need to contact the college writing office via phone or email and ask)–if a spot later opens in that class or if the university decides to open an additional section for the topic, she’ll be notified.

2) she can wait until second semester when the course will be offered again

(There simply aren’t enough slots for all freshmen to take WRT 105 in the fall. Some students are going to be closed out of ALL the freshman writing classes. BTW, it really isn’t necessary to WRT 105 immediately. There are some students who don’t take it until sophomore year or later.

D2 took WRT 105 in the spring of her freshman year with no noticeable issues either in her other classes or her schedule. She took a PHL class which was writing heavy first semester but her writing skills were good enough that it really wasn’t a problem.)

You are fantastically helpful as always!
