Freshman writing courses

We were looking at he various sections of WRT 105 in the Fall 2011 online course schedule and are a bit confused. There are many different sections listed, each with a different theme, but many of them say that they are already closed. How can this be? We haven't received any information about signing up for classes yet. Also, most of the sections show a course limit of 2 students. It would seem hard to accommodate 1000 freshmen that way...

You’ll sign up for WRT 105 over the summer. I think you’ll get a packet that will tell you when to go online to sign up. They do fill up fast, so log in and sign up right when it tells you you can. I think this just reserves your spot - you still actually register for the class during orientation when you register for everything.

As far as what you’re seeing online right now, my guess is that they have some spots open for current students who didn’t take it their freshman year for whatever reason. Don’t worry about it - you haven’t missed your chance to sign up!

As PinotNoir says the freshmen sections haven’t opened for pre-registrtion yet and won’t until sometime in July.

There are not enough slots in WRT 105 for ALL freshmen to be accommodated in the fall term. It is not essential to take WRT 105 immediately. Not having it will usually not negatively impact your student’s ability to be successful in his or her other classes.

Thanks for the helpful replies.

Is the freshman writing requirement one semester or a full year? It isn’t entirely clear to me if you sign up for just one section in the fall and then you’re done, or if you need to sign up for WRT 105 in both the fall and the spring. It looks as if WRT 105 is offered in both semesters.

The WRT 105 requirement is only one semester. WRT 105 courses are also offered in the Spring semester because there are not enough slots for the entire freshman class to take the requirement in the Fall semester. It’s not essential to take the course in the Fall, but I would recommend pre-registering for it over the summer to ensure that you get the class topic that you find most interesting. The courses fill up fast, so if you don’t pre-register you will most likely have to wait until the Spring to take it. Over the summer you will receive an information packet explaining how to pre-register for certain courses.

Freshman writing (WRT 105) is a one semester class**, usually taken in either the fall or spring of the freshman year. (Some students postpone taking WRT 105 until senior year. It’s not advised, but it is possible.) However, many departments required a second “writing intensive” class that is taken thru the student’s major department during the junior-senior year.

The “writing intensive” class has a substantial emphasis/instruction on professional writing skills and will fulfill most professional school/graduate school requirements for a second semester of writing instruction. (I know it fulfills med school requirements for a second semester of “English” that some schools require for admission.)

**Students who are marked as having a deficiency in writing skills either because of a low writing score on the ACT/SAT, or a low verbal score on the SAT, or low English score on the ACT will take a remedial WRT 105 which is 2 semesters.
