Freshman Year Flop?

Hello,
I am a sophomore in high school. The school I go to is a pretty challenging school in NY. My freshman year, I didn't do so hot taking all regents (normal) level classes. I got high 90's in English & World History. I barely passed algebra, and I didn't do so amazing in earth science. My mother got sick that year, I got a concussion and we moved all in one year, so those things obviously impacted my grade. This year, I got my act together and ended up taking honors English, World History and I am taking a junior-level spanish course. My grade for first quarter was an 88, which for me is good seeing as how I had roughly an 83 yearly average last year. My second quarter grade was an 89 and I'm looking at what should be a 91 third quarter grade. My aim this year is to have a 90 average. Next year, I am taking AP English, Honors US History, regents Chem & Trig as I am not that good at either, senior-level spanish honors and psycology and criminal justice. I am proud of the work I have done this year but I am afraid that colleges might just look at my GPA, which isn't too good right now due to my freshman year flop. I have heard that colleges like to see improvement and challenging courses but I still am afraid I will not get into a good college. My question is; do you think I am on the right path? Will colleges look past my freshman year? My top school choice right now is NYU for the film program, along with some SUNY art schools and Syracuse. Also, is there anything you guys recommend I do to out-weigh my freshman year mistakes?

Yes you are on the right path. Your courses are becoming more difficult and your grades are going up. Just continue the upward trend and study for the SAT.

NYU is one of the most expensive schools in the country - can you afford NYU before you get your sights set on it?
