Can you share what your on-campus living situations were your first year as well as the pros and cons for example:

I lived on a women only floor in a co-ed mixed class dorm with a communal bathroom.
Pros: Bathrooms were cleaner, girls on our floor bonded really well
Cons: communal bathroom drama re. not cleaning the tub and hall baths in general required more logistical planning

I live on a men only floor in a coed dorm, about 90% freshmen, communal baths.

Pros: most of us get along fairly well, easy to make friends with such a large number of freshmen

Cons: noise level can be annoying at times; sharing a bathroom with 29 other guys – and the bathroom is located at the other end of the hall from our room.

All-girl freshman-only floor in a coed honors-magnet dorm, communal bathrooms, laundry and kitchen. (The building is set up like a [, with a laundry room at one corner and a kitchen at the other. Which corner has which alternates between floors, so that I go down or up a floor to do laundry but the corner I’m closest to has a kitchen.)

Pros: I get on with my roommate well, made friends easily, am near my classes so I don’t need a car.

Cons: I live next to a bunch of sorority girls. They party all the freaking time. Cannot wait until they move out to their sorority houses next year. Also, is somewhat creepy washing my underwear on a guys’ floor.

I started the year in a 4 person suite (2 bedrooms, shared bathroom) in a co-ed dorm on the women’s floor.

Pro: Close to class
Con: Bad parking, horrible roommate having sex while I try to sleep, moldy bathroom since there were no windows/fans (suite mates never helped clean).

I switched dorms out during winter break and moved into a 2 person apartment on campus with a junior. It had two bedrooms, a living room, partial kitchen (no stove) but a full sized refrigerator, and a large bathroom with fans. I stayed in this room for 3 semesters, until I moved off campus.

Pro: Separate parking than the rest of campus community, cafe downstairs, close to the gym
Con: Far from other classes

I currently live in a double on all all female floor in a co-ed, all freshman dorm.

Pros: The girls on my floor have all become really close, and we tend to all go to meals together, hang out, etc. It’s nice having all freshman around because we’re all going through the same things, and in a lot of cases, taking the same classes. The first year program that we’re all in hosts lots of fun activities, which are pretty much invariably enjoyable. The rooms are also huge in my dorm.

In terms of living in a double, I really like my roommate and it’s nice to have someone around to talk to/have meals with.

Cons: The building is a bit far from some classes, but not as bad as many other dorms on campus. The bathrooms can be a touch gross because there are two for 30 people, but they are cleaned regularly. To some extent, the organized activities makes campus life honestly a little reminiscent of camp at times, and the bonding between most of the girls on the floor has left a few relatively excluded and leads to hard feelings.

In terms of living in a double, the only real cons are the occassional necessary compromises and the fact that my roommate is very messy.

Ninetyfresh: so sorry you had to deal with obnoxious roommate issues but it’s nice to see that you handled it so well

hyperJulie glad you are enjoying the all frosh living environment. That’s one of the reasons I started the thread. With different living arrangements at the various schools my Ds have been accepted to I was trying to get a grasp on what it’s like living in those situations.
