I'll be a freshman at UCSD next year and got a 5 on AP chem. I'm not allowed to take chem 6A,B,C, (basically AP chem stuff) but I can take 6BH and 6HC which is the honors course of the same material.

In terms of MCAT preparation, is AP chem enough that I can go straight to O Chem or would you recommend taking the honors courses in regular chem? I really don't know how the MCAT biochem section is broken down.

I was under the impression that many to most California medical schools don’t accept AP. So if you want to go to Cali, drop the AP.

As far as your question goes, yes AP chem is enough to go to O-chem if you really wanted to, though o-chem could be pretty rough for a first semester class. I recommend that you retake so that you are eligble for your in state schools though (assuming your a cali resident).

JTC, freshman year I found that taking honors gen chem was a much better route than going straight to ochem as many of my peers did. Unfortunately it did not give them much time to acclimate to college courses and many are thinking of retaking ochem. either way, good luck with your classes!
