freshman year of high school

i am just wondering how important actually is your freshman year of high school because i didnt do to well but my sophmore and junior years i really picked it up. Freshman year = 88% Sophmore Year = 95% Junior Year 95%, accompianed by strong sat scores. I was unable to apply for nass this year do to already planned events during all of the sessions but i do have a feel for academy life. So my main question is could these freshman marks tarnish my overall score or will they be mostly overlooked. Thanks

They will not be overlooked. However, if you did as well as you claim in your Sophomore and Junior years, and do even better your Senior year, then the improvement will be noticed as well.

I can speak from experience. My first two years of High School were ABYSMAL. Trust me; your Freshman year puts both of my first two years to shame. Still, during my last two years I was able to do extremely well academically, get the enthusiastic recommendations of my teachers, join a slew of clubs and sports, and demonstrate a near-obsessive desire to attend USNA. All that landed me at NAPS and, a year later, at USNA.

So, if your Freshman year is a high B, Sophomore and Junior years are both solid A's, and you can pull a solid A or better your Senior year, and provided you have all your other ducks in a row (clubs, sports, medical quals, etc.), then you will definitely be in the running.

Just remember, though, that nothing is guaranteed. Folks with near-"perfect" profiles have been known to be turned down, and black sheep like me have been known to make it (sometimes even directly). All you can do is keep doing your best and then roll the dice like everyone else.

Good luck. :)

thanks alot

i think rolling the dice is a great comparison to getting into the naval academy

Just remember that you have to EARN the dice to roll in the first place. That's the equivalent of getting a nomination.

After that, the analogy is probably pretty accurate, or at least accurate enough to make predictions almost pointless.

there's definitely hope! i know it's pretty difficult to even put up a gauge, but the admissions people work in mysterious ways--that's for sure!
:)

[i'm a plebe in 15 days...] and i went from a 3.2 freshman year up to 3.9ish my senior year (with much harder classes)...cumulatively it's around a 3.5/6ish. I'm pretty sure the academy takes in to account overall improvement! just stick with it, make sure you've got a complete application with ECA's and Sports as well....and stay motivated through the application process!

my advice--just work with what you've got. use your improvements from fresh. year to the best of your advantage.

best of luck!!

Just for the record....

I didn't break 2.3 either my Freshman or Sophomore years in HS.

Yes, it CAN be done. ;)

haha thanks for the encouragement everyone.

Disclaimer: There was a lot of affirmative action back then, don't look at individual cases unless you know their data.
