So I'm currently a freshmen in high school right now and summer is approaching. I really want to use this time to do something productive. Can anyone give me some ideas as to how I should spend my summer? Should I be self studying, volunteering, participating in summer programs? BTW. I don't have any careers in mind at the time being.

I’m also a freshman so this may not be that helpful but from what I’ve read on CC you can:

Take classes at a CC (I’m taking Chem over summer so I can take bio next year).

Internship (idk if this applies to freshmen): If you’re unsure of what career you want to choose this might help

Research: with a scientist or etc.

Summer programs at universities

Volunteer, locally or going far away (ex: Africa)

And like you said:

Self-study - SAT (I’m doing this a few hours a week), next year classes (like AP)

But, like many other posts on CC says, don’t do things because you want to look good to colleges. Do them because you want to.

Again, I’m also a freshmen so I might not have helped, but whatever you do, good luck!

I’d suggest finding some volunteer work that you enjoy doing. You don’t need to be super-productive, but it’s a good idea to do at least something.

Don’t forget to relax, though!

@hatooku: Freshmen are unlikely to be able to get internships or research positions. You’ll have lots more luck with those as a rising junior or senior.

Summer programs at universities can be a ton of fun (and look great on college apps at the same time) if you can afford them, but they’re extremely expensive. I did one as a rising senior and enjoyed it (I was taking classes, but having more fun than I would have at home), but it cost a ton.

Thanks for the reply!
@RedSeven
So would volunteering be a better decision or summer program. If I was to choose summer program, what kind of program should I choose? Science, math, writing? As I stated before, I really don’t know what I want to major in. I also don’t have a very big interest in science and math.

@RedSeven oh I c… My parents personally know a few doctors/scientists so I think I can get interships from there next year lol.

@ssflyer: I think you should do writing since you don’t really like science/math. And it might help you increase ur writing skills for the college app essays.
