I received a one day in school suspension freshmen year for “inappropriate computer use”, which means I accidentally downloaded a TOR browser from a fake website on a school computer which took out the wifi for a few days. They gave me a one day in school as I was behaviorally perfect besides this accident. How will this affect my admission chances?
Ask your school guidance counselor whether this can be removed from your record, considering your excellent behavior outside of this one incident from 3 years ago. If they say no, ask if can not be noted on your transcript and not mentioned in your recommendation letter. I cannot see why they would not comply with this.
I believe that the common app has removed the disciplinary history question.
They have removed from the main section. However, individual colleges can still ask the question on their sections.
Being in IT, there’s definitely worse things you could’ve done. Student computers aren’t supposed to have permission to download software, modify wi-fi settings, or go to those kind of websites. That’s mostly the fault of IT for not properly locking down those machines.
Anyway, lesson learned. I wouldn’t make a big deal out of it. If they don’t ask, don’t tell. Many teenagers get into college who have done much worse things. I did more than my fair share many years ago.
