Fridge?

To current students or their parents, what are your thoughts about bringing a fridge/microfridge? Did you order it through the company recommended by Cornell, or did you bring your own on move-in day? (Or did you wait until later?) I think I would rather buy one for my daughter instead of renting, because she can use it for a couple of years and has a younger sibling who can use it if she ends up in an apartment or someplace else with appliances. Also, for those with a microfridge, did you actually use the microwave? Do most students have a fridge in their room?

i bought a small fridge at Target. and a microwave. They were priced right and worked out great.

IIRC, the rental cost only slightly less than a comparable mini-fridge at Wal-Mart. I got a 4.3 cubic inch mini-fridge from Wal-Mart for something like $130 last semester. Don't know if it will work in the dorms, however (power requirements).

My daughter had a fridge in her room. It is a small fridge that we already have. It was extremely useful for her because she had fresh fruits, milk or left over food in the fridge. She usually had cereal for breakfast in her room instead of going to a cafeteria. My daughter did microwave food every once in a while, but she did it in the dorm kitchen. Meal time is a social time, my daughter tend like to eat with her friends rather than in her room by herself.

I don't know if you would want to buy a fridge for your daughter because it's very likely she wouldn't need it after the first year. My daughter is going to be living in a sorority this year and off campus apartments Junior and Senior years. She probably will not need a fridge again.

Thanks, everyone! So...do we bring the fridge up with us on move-in day?

You can try to buy a fridge in Ithaca....but they'll be hard to find. I didn't bother renting from Cornell. At my old college I had a microfridge because I was on the swim team and ate meals at odd hours.

I had a small fridge in Ithaca for beverages and yogurt.

just a question: gomestar mentioned buying a microwave. was this legal at that time, or was the rule (essentially) "no microwave but on the microfridge" not well-enforced? my materials say that we can't bring our own microwaves, I mean...

if all the dorms have a kitchenette or something where there is a nearby microwave, I wouldn't really need to heat up food in my room that badly, I think...

Most dorms have a nice microwave -- I lived in Mews and often used the microwave in our kitchen. I didn't really use the mini-fridge when my roommate and I had one, and eventually he just took it back home because of its disuse -- for important things, my friends let me borrow theirs. It really depends on the student's living style... which unfortunately they won't really know until they live in the dorms. :P

thanks for that info on the microwaves!
I will probably end up developing a routine based on what's available to me anyway. so it should be all good.

a million times YES. get a fridge. It doesn't have to be terribly big but you will use it. Leftovers from Louie's/Nasties, random food from wegman's runs, milk, eggs, alcohol...

a microwave is optional though seeing as how every floor has at least one.

you say it's optional, but I thought it wasnt allowed? Can we or can we not have microwaves in our room? I mean, I know the housing site says no microwaves, but are they strict in enforcing it?

order a fridge online at target on movein day they will prob run out. and pick it up in ithaca, there is also a walmart, lowes and kmart in ithaca. at target i got a mini fridge for like $88 or something. I say buy her a fridge it is very useful the floor kitchens are dirty. And she shouldn't rely on her roommate's fridge. at the end of the year put it in storage, sell it, or take it home and use it urself. I love my fridge it saved me many all-nighters.

And you can't have microwaves in rooms. They are not necessary anyway. To heat up water just buy a electric kettle for like $10 at target. And you can use those. but fridges are allowed.
