A friend of mine is going to be a Sophomore BME at JHU this fall, and he had a question about whether he should
1. minor in computer integrated surgery
2. double major in BME + Computer Science

he's premed, and wants to know which will look better on his med school app.

his grades are 3.8 overall gpa and 3.7 for science.

I recommended that he should do the minor b/c it will show deeper understanding and breadth in his BME degree.

But my other friend says that a second major and similar GPA's will look much better.

What do you guys think?

Sounds like extremely ambitios, does he do anything else but study? His workload will depend on his life style. How about EC’s? Computer Science is very time consuming with incredible hours in a lab to complete programming assignments. This was my field of study.

Aren’t there premed advisors for him to talk to? Hopkins is considered one of the best premed schools out there, so there should be someone who can tell him which is best for med school.

IMO, it won’t matter too much which major he chooses. He’ll do best studying what he is interested in (to an extent, a second CS major with BME and premed seems brutal) and that will set him up better for med school. Enough data shows that major doesn’t matter that much, so he’s better off doing research instead of spending all his time on a CS major.

i think your friend should probably focus on getting through his second year BME courses at JHU before thinking about additional majors and minors

He needs to register soon, and he claims that he can handle either path. What will look better, say a 3.8 overall GPA, a minor or the double major???

Nobody will care either way.

Go with the minor. Double majoring will not gain him points and it will take more time.
