A friend of mine is a CIS major at Baruch College, which is in NYC. Given his location, there are plenty of headquarters and offices of big name companies here in Manhattan. He's going to graduate within two years, and his only experience in the field are two internships, both of which did not deal with any technical skills. One was with the NYC Board of Education (IT intern, but seemed more like logistics and inventory of the technology equipment), and the other one was with an HR company (dealt with IT stuff; also, don't know the details but I knew he worked with some projects that were management-related).

Now he's worried that he won't have the technological skills that bigger firms will require when applying. Beyond that, he's unsure of which companies are looking for CIS graduates. He met a few people at firms such as Goldman Sachs and Deloitte, but he thinks he isn't ready when it comes to the technical skills (for example, he's taking programming I C++ now).

What are some of the venture companies for new CIS graduates? Should he just work with start-up companies and then work his way into the bigger firms, or is there some other advice?
