Friend took one of my Essay Ideas

My friend and I were both chatting on gmail, and I told him about one of the ideas I was going to write about (playing a specific game) for one of the MIT essays. I was going to write that essay last week, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I found out today tho that he has already written an essay on the topic I was going to write about.

I am very angry because I wanted to use the topic for my essay, which I am writing right now. He and I are both applying to MIT, and we go to the same school. Should I still use the topic, even though he has already written about it? What I'm writing about is a pretty common activity, so there probably a lot of other people who might talk about it. Is there any chance that both of us will be rejected from MIT because out essays are about the same subject?

If you think you can write a great essay on this topic, I think you should go for it. If it’s a common topic and you think others will write about the same thing anyway, I don’t think it’s a huge deal that your friend is writing about it too. However, if it’s a common topic you have to put your own spin on it to make your essay unique and memorable. If you like this topic and think you can do it, go for it!
