Stealing an Essay Topic

Suppose....

You and your friend apply for a summer program. After you both have submitted your application, your friend tells you the subject (JUST the subject, no details) of his essay. You realize that the subject is amazing. Is it ok to use the same subject when writing essays for college applications? What if we (did I say we) apply to different colleges? What if we apply to the same colleges?

The subject does include a personal experience that was shared by both of the people.

If you’re going to approach it in a very similar manner to your friend, you shouldn’t use the same topic, especially if you’re applying to the same colleges or programs.

If you’re applying to different colleges, there can be a bit more similarity, but I would advise picking a different topic if most of what you have to say about it will be the same as what your friend is saying.

If you approach the same subject in completely different ways, though, that should be fine (unless it’s a personal experience that is very rare and/or unique). For example, lots of people write about the same club or type of activity.

I think it depends on the topic and how specific it is. Also, does your friend know that you are considering doing this? He/she might not appreciate it.

Don’t be a db. :\ Come up with your own ideas.

"Don’t be a db. :"
Words to live by. Ok guys, I guess I won’t copy it. Even though it means that I will have no change at all in elite admissions D=. Seriously though, his idea was pure genius.

I would argue that what you say and how you say it is much more important than coming up with a genius/creative topic.

How would you feel if he stole your idea? Don’t do it.
