My classes, as far as I can tell, are genuinely as hard, if not harder than college classes. This summer at Harvard SSP, I know not really a good judge of everything, there could be a lot of work, but the concepts and expectations were lower if anything as compared to my school. NO one gets anything near a perfect grade on any essay because the teachers do not believe that there could ever be a perfect essay. Bonus points are completely obsolete, as well as bonus work.

That sounds like really good college prep. Let me tell you, if I didn't get extra credit, my GPA would be significantly lower. Do you still get busy work? Are students treated as somewhat mature people? I would think that would come with a harder workload like that.

We are treated with much more respect. The teachers, despite having advanced degrees are very accessible and open. We talk about our lives and hear stories from our teachers' high school experience.
We do get some busy work. I don't think anywhere gives absolutely no busy work. In math classes where the top students can do well without doing homework, the homework is not collected so you don't really have to do it. Science courses require mostly reading, and not much rote homework. English courses are only reading and writing essays, for the most part with occasional grammar. History courses require a lot of notes, but I don't think that is what you would call busy work.
We as students are treated like people, for the most part. My Ap Chem teacher in General Chemistry does teach to the bottom of the class and seems to demean a bit, but he iddn't in AP Chem. I wouldn't stand a teacher who thinks they are higher than us simply by position. We are more lead to question everything, including authority.

Your daughter's high school must be really good. However, in general, applicants don't need a 4.6 gpa or 1500 SAT Score to get into Brown. There is so much taken into consideration in the application process. For instance, one guy who goes to my school didn't have a 4.6 gpa, and definitely did not get a 1500 on the SAT, but he got into Brown for sports.

I loved reading a book called "A Hope in the Unseen" about a young man named Cedric Jennings that grew up in a had neighborhood in DC and ended up at Brown. It's a long story, but he was bright, great in math and loved to write. With a great essay telling why he wanted to go and a 980 I think SAT, they welcomed him. He struggled a bit at first with some things but had solid B's and graduated with a 3.2 average. Later he went to Harvard and got honors. He is trying to reach out to kids like himself and thanks Brown for givng him a chance. Not many schools would of given him a chance with his scores, but they did because they saw the whole picture. Sometimes you have to look beyond the fancy school and prep tests. I think this should be with anyone that is having a hardship and not just race.

Debruns, I know what book you are talking about. I was in Barnes and Noble, and I saw it, and I picked it up, and began to read it. I definitely plan on buying that book.

in my area, the private schools kids are dumber lol
