I am wondering too. They have english school in Shanghai? well as for your chances, You've got a decent scores and all those extracirricular activities.( i mean I didn't even know they have varsity sports in Chinese (public)school, but i don't really know about private school. As far as i know however, private schools in china aren't really that great.) However, one important thing, are u applying for financial aid? If you don't then you have a shot at those schools.

btw, lol it's nice to know there are rockers in china. I myself play guitar. Hey what's your fav. band man?

There are actually several english schhols in shanghai. Some are built by the local while some are 100% american or british.

I was planning to attend one but I ended up coming to LA

I don't think kiddo would really need fin aid because if he can afford to attend one of those private schools, he should have rather affulent parents.

A year's tuition cost over 20k, if I remember correctly.

haha yea, there are private schools in Shanghai, but mine's kinda different...

the one i go to is international and sponsored by this one company. It's relatively new (5th yr i think), and like i said, my class is the first graduating class, so i dunno how colleges are gnna rate me. O, and even though it's private, it's not exactly your first-rate private school, the tuitions are like <$2000 per semester (i think), so it makes do with what it has...

not applying fin. aid (My family's not poor, but it isn't as rich as you think it is)anymore comments, insights anyone?

Currently Listening: Asian Dub Foundation
To EVH: There are loads of rockers here in SH, but most of them are still underground. The punk scenes here are prbly bigger than in LA. Ppl go wild at rock concerts. It's crazy

So there is another international school in Shanghai that has an AP Program...interesting. BTW, is SMIC an official Collegeboard test site (SATs & APs)? I always thought that SAS was the only one...

Ewww. punk rock? God i think you guys can do better than punk. Anyway i've never heard of asian dub foundation, in fact the only chinese rock band i've ever listened to is Beyond and i can't really call it rock n roll cuz their songs are wayyyy too popy. Anyway, i listen to what I consider as good old rock n roll. Led zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Guns N roses (i think they are pretty big in china), Pink Floy, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and many many more. Trust me, anyone of the above kicks any punk band's ass.

Back to your application. While personally i am not singling you out or anything. But i am against the trend that's happening in china right now. Everyone seriously god everyone dreams of coming out of china like it's some aweful place. China has the fastest growing economy and i believe that we will ended up better there than anywhere else in the world in the near future. Think about all the rich people in china. They sent their kids out to the states, paying hundreds of thousands of dollars if not millions along the way. Especially considering that most people who are rich in china are burearacrats who pretty damn corrupt. Man i am ****ed everytime i think about the money that the western schools milked out of Chinese people. It's like our cheap labor ain't enough for them. I am just hoping you, my friend, would go back to china (if u do come out)and give back to the country where you were raised. I myself cna't wait to go back once i finish my education. JFK once said "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." If we all as chinese think more about how we can solve the current problems and all countribute a little to the country, china would've been much better off. Nowadays people just rant too much and doens't do anything concret.

Good luck to you though (and i hope your family ain't some corrupt beauracrats : )

Yes corruption is very bad in China. However there are definately alot of very wealthy people that got their money by doing business (i can't really say they are that legit either considering almost everyone bypasses the taxes).

China will certainly be very powerful in the future but overpopulation and the gap between the rich and poor is simply too great. In 50 years or so, some parts of China may be able to compete with the world powers but considering over 70% of chinese people are still working in the farm, it would take much longer for everyone in China to obtain the same privledges those in large cities will manage to attain in the near future. India will also be a world power one day but it faces alot of the same problems as China....

well, evh, you can't really blame peopel trying to come to the states. I mean, competition in China is ridiculous. You can't even get into any college without beating your brains out....its just way too competitive. Those who receive an education from abroad will have a much bigger advantage if they choose to go back. It sort of sucks but thats the way it works...for some reason like you said, chinese people tend to always think everything from outside is always so much better. However the good news is that people are finally starting to realize the reality....

I'm a chinese, and I can tell you guys how horrible the chinese high school education is, for most common students!
the standard college admission test(high school students' fate) is once a year, and you can not use the highest one, but the last one.
the difficulty is ridiculous, the AP physics c that I have done is at most 30% of the chinese test difficulty. i got about 150/160 on one model test, although i have a middle level physics in china.
almost no high school senior or juniors could sleep before 12 PM, work until 2 or 3 AM is so common, the seniors in our school have a averege sleep time of about 5 hours a day.
if you are interested in this, just contact me, my e-mail is utoyxc@yahoo.com.cn and, i can sent you some questions in our test.

i think you guys need to know that theres a difference between international school and local school

and actually, im quite familiar with both. i went to the OPs school, and i know several college students in chongqing, shanghai, chengdu, and so on..

yeah, the chinese school system is definately flawed... severely. it really prepares you acedemically, but thats not really useful in the real world. the US has a much more comprehensive system, and i think overall, that will have more benefits.

i deduced that the over competitive chinese high school is due to the fact of the population, and that is the only applicable way to do like that, it's impossible to do as comprehensive as that in the USA.

okay, so now u are getting good marks and u are saying how bad chinese education is. at least be grateful for what u've learned becuase it definitely made your life easier here. And guess what, i would rather the education system here be more challenging because it's under those challenging situations the capable student can stand out! At the same time, i do agree that the Chinese system is flawed in that it doens't offer many extracirricular activities. I mean it would've been nice if there is school basketball/soccer team, etc. later boys!

if you are certified national athlete, you will have 20- 30 extra score on you college admission test, totally 750.
all the things are summarized by the admission test, if the school's line is 650, and you got 649, you will have %0 chance, if you got 649.5, no matter what, you got the ticket.
