What exactly are these classes? I will be in engineering and I know I'm supposed to take one each semester my first year. Right now I'm signed up to take both English APs. Can I use AP credits or other means and exempt?

ahhh! writing?!! noo!!!
well, on second thought, it probably won't be that bad. i enjoy writing sometimes.

writing is the best

I'll do your essays for money :)

lol...ill do essays for money as well! i'll do anything for money.

any takers? ;)

it all just depends on how much money

I received a 5 on both English AP tests but according to my college's policy (CAS), you can only place out of one of the two writing seminars

poo for cornell =/

I'm so excited for the freshman writing seminar!! I could place out but I don't want to. I love writing.. I'm at school now but I'll post the link later. They seriously have something for everyone. :)

^ Here's the link with the hundreds of writing seminars to choose from. I can't seem to narrow it down just yet but "Morality and Happiness" or "Propaganda" are definitely some of my top choices. Or I could do something really out there like "Butches, *****es, and Buggers: A Survey of Queer Drama". How about you guys?

Wow it censors a word straight from Cornell's own website! Gotta love it! :p

Check with your college to find out how many you can place out of; some colleges allow you to place out of both.

"I'm so excited for the freshman writing seminar!! I could place out but I don't want to. "

LOL! Lets see how much you love re-writing that same paper for the 3rd time when you have 3 other prelims to study for.

why is it called frosh? i get the whole freshmen thing..

so EVERYONE has to take these???

Do you know if Engineering allows you to place out of both with sufficient credit?

I think every freshman must take at least one writing seminar, no matter what college you're in or how well you did on the AP Lit or Language tests

lol am I the only one, besides Hotelie, who is looking foward to these things?

they won't be bad, not particularly looking forward to all the work at cornell though

What kinds of assignments do they give? I mean, how much can one write about "Hair, Skin, Nails, and Muscles: Historical Encounters with the Social Body" anyway? Also, didn't there use to be a Simpsons seminar? What happened there?

haha I think i want to take "Like Slang 101" haha on teen speak

Certainly got shut down on that one. BUT - writing comes easily to me (I've had infinite pracitce in high school) so I personally believe that re-editing a paper would be a welcome and relaxing break from cramming for prelims. Obviously it might be a little more tedious for someone with no interest in English who is, for example, an engineering major.

If you end up taking a writing seminar you have no interest in, it's your own damn fault. There is over a 100 to choose from (many many subjects). As someone who is premed and therefore has to take a lot of science classes, I always welcome classes like writing seminars. And I didn't even take a super-interesting one my frosh year. I took one on "freedom" (it had a longer, more descriptive title) and it was still a lot of fun.
