Hi

I'm a second year student at RIT. I spent my first year doing the core courses. I spent the Fall Semester of my second year doing a photo major (Biomedical Photography) while I'm spending the Spring Semester doing a Biotechnology & Molecular Biosciences.

I'm not interested in this. I truly thought I would be. Over the summer, I visited the sonography department to see about being transferred in. I was told there weren't enough seats. I thought to myself, okay I'll stick to this major (Biomedical Photo). At the end of the semester, I hated it so I switched to my current major. Again, I'm hating this. The ONLY major I truly want to do is sonography/ultrasound. I feel like I'm wasting time AND money, especially my second year of college because I am funded by VR (vocational rehabilitation) and it's only good until 2016.

I'm just frustrated. I don't want to leave RIT because it's a good school, a private university, and has great support services (for hard of hearing & deaf students). I've also found a life here, great friends and a great boyfriend that I couldn't find anywhere else due to being "mainstreamed" in a hearing setting (I am hard of hearing, always had difficulty with socialization in mainstreamed settings. Basically I was depressed in a mainstreamed world and I finally came here two years ago and I'm happy with myself. I used to hate myself for being hard of hearing. I don't want to go back to feeling like that in a mainstreamed school). I even tried to go to Center for Multidisciplinary Studies (basically, create your own major) to see if I could make my own sonography major but I can't because the classes are closed. I even have an interest in Nutrition Management but it's also closed!

I could transfer to one of the 12 PA SSHE (state system of higher education) because VR supports PA SSHE schools but I don't want to leave this school. There are two PA sonography & radiology schools in PA, the closest to RIT being 4 hours away.

What should I do? I've spoken to my adviser who doesn't really seem to care.

Should I just leave school and work somewhere until I truly know what I want? I'm confident about sonography, radiology, and nutrition management (listed by priority) and have found I'd be happy working in a health setting.

I have found a local community college that has radiology. I was thinking, maybe I could do two years there and then transfer to a PA SSHE school to finish the last two years that VR would cover.

Also, does it look better to graduate from a private university? I was told by many students here to stick to RIT (when stuck between a major here and somewhere else) because it's a private university.
