Maybe one of the insiders would comment on just how FSU's Athletic budget for 2012/13 came up 2.4 million short. What happened? This red ink situation seems to be driving a move for conference change, possibly leaving the ACC for the "Big 12." Anyway, say what FSU insiders with somewhat accurate info.

P2N-- Maybe a short term issue. Or, maybe an administrative budget shell game to justify playing bigger name teams in Tallahassee on football weekends. The article I read contends the ACC is really a basketball conference and FSU needs to become part of an eastern division of an emerging “Big 12” conference-- or a football conference. By creating a crisis the justification for alligning with the “Big 12” along with Clemson would be much easier. I was just curious what the inside FSU intelligentcia had picked up on the matter.

Matt125-- My cynical point- Maybe it was made public to assist with a transition out of the ACC and into a new “Big 12” football oriented conference.

FWIW- Hiding a huge budget shortfall in a “sunshine” state will just bite you in the butt sooner or later-- so fessing up is at least “honest.” My point is that I don’t for a minute believe that the budget shortfall is “honest.” It may be contrived for a purpose ^^^^.

I’m simply trying to find out if the FSU insiders have some good info on the budget matter.

Why do people continually make it sound like FSU is leaving the ACC?

If you think the budget’s in the red now, see what happens once they pay that exit fee to the ACC, and start having to travel further than just up and down I-95 for sporting events. The Big 12 isn’t better for FSU. The Big 12 is all about pleasing Texas, and has been for years.

If FSU was leaving the ACC, you’d read about it on ESPN or CBS or one of the other idiotic “anonymous sources said” sites. The fact that nothing has come up- while teams like San Jose State and Utah State are getting coverage- suggests highly that not a damn thing is changing with FSU.

I’m not surprised that there’s a budget “shortfall” in the athletics department. A LOT of schools have athletic budgets that are in the red.

Pasbal-- At least someone gets it at FSU-- Texas, Texas, Texas!! FSU would be nuts to join the Big 1/little#?. No equal seats at the table in the Big 12. It’s ALL about Texas.
Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri, and ATM had enough.

I still believe there is more to this Athletic Department “budget shortfall” than meets the eye. This does not pass the sniff test.

I see NOTHING which indicates FSU is leaving for the SEC or anywhere else. The ACC is best for FSU, according to Barron, not the SEC, which would enable some nice football games and little else. For academics the ACC is by far the best conference for Florida State short of the Ivy League.

bn12gg: I read that same point on Warchant. I’d love to believe that to be the case, and would love to see us in the Big 12, but P2N is right in that Barron supports us being in the ACC. Your point isn’t cynical though; it’s optimistic as far as I’m concerned.

I don’t get why we care so much about conference academic reputation. Not like the ACC has done anything to improve FSU’s academic reputation, and it’s not like being in a conference with “dumber” schools will worsen our reputation. Nobody says “FSU is in a conference with Duke; they must be a great school.”

Fact is, if we want to remain competitive as a football power amongst football powers, we need to be in a conference that will make us money. The Big 12 will make us money. With the ACC, we will continue to have tight budgets and budget deficits within those tight budgets.

That fact that the ACC covers big markets on the eastern seaboard is a plus for an administration that wants to promote FSU. The big12 seems to be filled with smaller, Midwestern markets. It’s not easy to measure the effect of being in an academic conference on a school’s perception, but the non-athletic faculty generally favor the ACC.

Maybe I’m not looking at it the “right” way, but I honestly don’t see how a change to the Big 12 would make FSU money, considering that the Big 12 has one of the lowest revenue numbers of the major BCS conference (not to mention that the Big 12 will do anything to keep Texas happy…).

The ACC is way more secure than the Big 12, which lost two teams to the SEC. They gave up a great rivalry with TAMU and Texas, and would be truly on the brink of disaster without the addition of WVU. The ACC managed to add two teams with pretty decent history in both football and basketball. FSU will only benefit from joining the SEC, but I doubt any of us want to have to hurdle 5 top 15 teams just to make it to a BCS game.

I have noticed that ever since the report about the athletic department being in the red this year came up, that the rumors of FSU (and Clemson, apparently?) moving to the Big 12 cropped back up in full force, with the only real “evidence” supporting such a move being this deficit. The apparent logic being used would be that, if FSU were to leave the ACC, the Big 12 would essentially pay FSU’s exit fee (50% would simply be paid by the Big 12, and the other 50% would be loaned to FSU by the Big 12).

What’s funny is that FSU’s never shown a single inkling of their wanting to leave the ACC. It’s just stupid reports of how “FSU would be better off elsewhere” or something similar. The ACC isn’t like the Big East, the WAC, or the Big 12 and constantly in need of new members to replace departing members, but the way all these reports make it sound, the ACC is only a small step away from disappearing…

How are the ACC and SEC unstable? I agree that the Big East and MWC and WAC and Big 12 aren’t exactly stable conferences, but if there’s a conference that appears to be stable, it’s the ACC or SEC.

Pasbal-- An oversight on not including the SEC (I gag thinking about their academics and
oversigning, sorry). My point-- FSU needs to think about assisting in building the ACC into a premier academic/athletic conference-- looking at Warchant FSU is about to go to the Big “12.” Bleh. Stay and build. Be a player-- not just a money whore.

.02 David

Clemson-- LOL-- They are off to anywhere-- just athletic $$'s

Hasn’t Warchant though been saying that FSU was getting ready to bolt the ACC for a while now?

It’s one thing if they weren’t what seemed like the only place suggesting that FSU was getting ready to leave, but none of the major sports sites are reporting anything- and if there’s a rumor out there, ESPN/CBS/FOX/etc would all pick up on it and run with it (especially ESPN).

The fact it’s just Warchant suggesting that makes me believe they’re simply trying to stir up some controversy, leading to some page hits on their site.
