I've recently been accepted into FSU. I'm weighing my options with schools right now (UF, UCF, FSU), and since they're all such good schools, I'm looking more into social aspects of each town. My biggest concern with FSU is that it kind of seems like the college is the only thing in the city, and that outside of going out, etc. I might get bored. I'm not planning on doing Greek life next year, so I was just wondering how accurate this may be? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Tallahassee, as Florida’s capital city has state government (the Legislature, the Executive Branch and the Judiciary) as the likely first priority. Florida State University may be second, then FAMU, TCC, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (the only national lab in Florida) and so on. In sports, FSU is clearly number one.

In Gainesville, UF is about all there is, then Shands Hospital and Santa Fe College.

In Orlando, it’s all about The Mouse. Otherwise Orlando is a sleepy farming community.

uf - introverts
ucf - tourists
fsu - friendly people

pick one

I don’t know when you last visited Orlando, but describing it as a “sleepy farming community” aside from Disney is nuts. There are over two million people in the Orlando area and there are a million things to do. Additionally, you are within a short driving distance of dozens of beaches and other major cities.

That being said, FSU is still probably a better choice if a social life is a priority. UCF has made amazing progress over the last couple of decades, but it is still a bit of an overgrown commuter college and there is a fair amount of apathy among the students. FSU and UF are not commuter colleges and there is more school spirit (especially at FSU). The Tallahassee metro area is a fraction of the size of Orlando, but it’s still a pretty big town, not to mention the state capital, with a lot of places to hang out. It is definitely not accurate to say that FSU is the only thing in town. Gainesville, on the other hand, is the quintessential small, college town.

For the record, I was raised in the Orlando area and have relatives and countless friends and co-workers who graduated from UCF, although I attend FSU.

Another thing to consider is that Tallahassee is the most educated city in Florida and is a bit classier than Orlando. There are fewer people in Tally, but there are probably more cool, intelligent people per capita. Orlando is a big party town, but it can honestly be quite tacky, especially in the tourist areas (which can still be fun, but tastes can vary).

Tallahassee is great. I had no problem finding stuff to do on the weekend. And if frats and that stuff arent your thing, there is SOOO much to do on campus. You just have to get out there and meet people.

If you can’t find something to do on or around campus, you aren’t trying to find something. Or you’re just the most boring person in the world.

It’s really that simple.
