The Penn State website is awesome. Anything and everything you need to know for your 4 years is available on the site. Use the summer to explore this website and get to know it very, very well. Every major has curriculum guidelines. They are at your fingertips.

I have a question. For the gym classes (fencing, judo, snowboarding, etc.), do we actually DO those activities, or do we just read about them and listen to lectures?

you actually DO those activities.
I took racquetball, squash, bowling, badminton, fitness and games (we ran a mile and played a game in a different sport each class.)

Folks - we just had our FTCAP day last Friday. Don't get too exercised about all of the course stuff. Read up on the coursework for your college and major, but most of your questions will be answered during your day on campus. There is a fair amount of nuance in the course scheduling that is hard to pick up from the web site, etc.

My son is in Smeal, but my understanding is that the engineers' curriculum has less latitude than some other majors.

BTW, grab some chow at the Corner Room if you have time, and for those who enjoy these things, order a Black Dog ale there. Fabulous.

By the way, are there maps on campus (the ones behind those glass thingies)? I tried printing one from PSU's website, but it was too small to read.

yes there's campus maps all over campus and if you can't find the building your looking for, the students on campus are very nice to help you find your destination.

You'll need Acrobat reader to print these out: What we did was printed out the one that's titled "PDF, 8.5 x 11" Letter sized page" then printed the "Building Index" on the back (so the map is on the front and the building index is on the back of the page.) I have no trouble reading it.
