Some of the other (also large) schools my son is looking at offer students hosts for overnights. I can't seem to find any info on this at Penn State. Do they do this sort of thing?

No, unfortunately they do not. PSU also doesn’t have a freshman overnight orientation. It really does contribute to freshman chaos in August since the students really haven’t been orientated around the campus. I know there is a freshman day in Feb. but many students don’t attend since they still haven’t decided. Take some time at the FTCAP day to walk around and find the different buildings and get familiar with campus. On the bright side, it doesn’t take long to figure out where you need to be and many of the freshmen have been to PSU so often they can help out the others.

my son did overnights at PSU…but they were not official. We’re in PA so my s and his friends usually had connections…cousins, friends, brothers, sisters. They just crashed in the room.

FTCAP is really important…they do give you a lot of info on that day.
In addition, if you choose PSU, they have an excellent outdoor orientation program called Orion. It’s mostly at Mount Nittany and it’s a 3-5 day backpacking trip. Great way to get to know some students before starting up in the fall. And fun.

Good luck to you. I know you’re running into some challenges with PSU. Not surprised I guess, but give them a shot. My s liked it once he visited (was LAST on his list before that). Would not have been MY first choice but it was his. And it turned out just fine.

As a current PSU student I can say that this is no longer true. I will be hosting a prospective student overnight this November
