Ftcap

Can anyone tell me what to expect at FTCAP, in terms of things like parental attendance, how things get done, getting the ID+ card, etc? I took my tests and EPS March 14 (the day the card came in) and am now just waiting to hear when my advising day will be.

TIA!

I have to admit - everything at FTCAP went pretty smoothly. I still wasn’t thrilled about having to fly 1000+ miles and spending 2 nights to get it all done - but it was okay.

Getting the ID card, computer access, and LionCash stuff set up was handled first thing in the morning in the HUB and was pretty easy. Some long lines, but they went fast. Then the parents/kids were split into 2 separate groups. Parents had their “orientation” and the kids had theirs. Then, we met up again for lunch. In the afternoon we attended a presentation by the College of Engr, and then the students met with advisers to set up their fall schedule.

We waited and got the ID etc. during the lunch break; the lines were much shorter then. I think most parents attend with their children, but not all. The students handle their own scheduling, so it is mostly just informational for the parents. One of the assistant deans took questions at the end, when we were waiting for our kids to finish up, which was sort of entertaining.

Thank you both!

If you can be on campus the day before, you can get your ID and (I believe) account access beforehand, which will save you some time. During Ftcap periods, those offices are really busy in the mornings, so if you can do it in the afternoon, you will avoid a lot of the crowds.

Also, with our sons, we checked the schedule the night before and picked out some classes of interest that still had open spots. They took that info with them to Ftcap, and went through the scheduling process very quickly.

I have a question in regards to the three FTCAP tests. The official policy, as reiterated today in a phone call, is that students take the three FTCAP tests in a single three hour block of time. Yet, my daughter knows 2 friends who took only one part of the test and will go back to the other two parts at a later date. I called PSU and was told by someone in the FTCAP office that “students are supposed to take the test in a single 3 hour seating.” I asked if there was a penalty if students only took one part first and she said “maybe” and that they could be “locked out from going back into the test.” So, my question: one 3 hour seating, or take the parts separately? Does anyone know of anyone who has been “penalized” for doing this? Thanks!

I don’t know anyone who has been locked out, but why take the chance, especially if you were told by someone at PSU that that is the expectation?
