Fulfilling foreign language graduation requirements

How many units of foreign language do i have to do to fulfill the graduation requirement? Do i only need 5 units(so 1 quarter) of foreign language, so i can just take the easiest level(like 1A) and get rid of it? I signed up for 1D, but if i only need to take one quarter, can i just change to 1A to make it easier for me since i am not pursuing a foreign language major? Or is a sequence so that if I take 1A this quarter, next quarter i have to take 1B, then 1C, and eventually 1D?

Passing a foreign language proficiency exam which consists of a satisfactory score on a standard reading examination and conversational proficiency in an oral interview.
OR

Completion of a fourth quarter (or higher level) language course.

At least this is what Revelle's is.

yea i am in revelle. so can i just take 1A, the easiest, this quarter and get it over with? Or will they require me to continue on to 1B next quarter, and so forth until i finish 1D? So i will have to take 1D eventually?

You can take whatever you want. Bottom line is that you have to take 1D for credit by the end of your time at UCSD.

thanks for clarifying. i finally got it.

does anyone know how hard the language proficiency exam is? like, do you need to be able to read well and fast? or it more for comprehension? and how hard is the the oral part?

The questions are pretty easy. It's all multiple choice, and you just have to give the logical reply/answer. It's not going to try and trick you, it's just making sure you know the words.

The oral part is just a ten minute discussion with a person. The person just wants to see if you can hold a conversation without making lots of mistakes.

thanks roflkeke. so the test is basically a reading comprehension multiple choice test and then a conversation? how long was the multiple choice test for you? but overall, that doesn't seem too bad. thanks!

Pretty sure it's 50.

what if i want to take a test that's not on the list for the reading portion, like vietnamese or chinese?

" During your first quarter at UCSD, print a copy of the "Language Proficiency Exam Request" form and the list of approved Language Testers . Contact the tester and schedule a proficiency exam. Bring your exam request form, and the Language Proficiency Guidelines with you to the test. After the test, you will take the request form completed by the tester to the language office.

If approved testers are not available, you will need to continue with the language you studied in high school to meet the proficiency requirement."
