What do you mean by full ride? They don't offer full merit scholarships. And no, you are a borderline candidate at getting in with no chance at a merit scholarship. You would get good financial aid if you got in though I bet.

Hopkins does offer a select few merit scholarships, about twenty a year (Hodson Trust - valued at $23,000 next year). Only a very few students can actually get a full ride.

First, their Baltimore Scholars program offers full tuition scholarships to any admitted students who have attended high school and lived in Baltimore City for 3 consecutive years. The scholarship only covers tuition but if students are needy enough financial aid may cover room, board, and other expenses.

Second, the two Westgate scholars from the Engineering school are full tuition scholars who depending on need can also get full packages by adding financial aid.

Third, some Lacrosse recruits.

Good luck.

Laxfan04, since you work in the Admissions office, I had a question about the Hodson Trust scholarships - I've read over and over again that they only offer ~20 per year, but I thought there were a lot more than 20 people at the Hodson Scholarship Reception (in April?). Is 20 roughly the number of recepients who decide to attend Hopkins, is there some other Hodson scholarship awarded, or did I just over-estimate the number of people there?

Yea there definitely seemed to be more than 20. From what I understand i think about 50 are offered every year and 20ish accept. I think hodson success scholars were there also though. Hodson success scholars are for minorities and are grants without loans.

The budget for the Hodson Trust scholarship is set to accommodate 20 new Hopkins students each year. To make that number, the Admissions committee will always choose more than 20 -- I think last year the number was close to 60. So, no you did not over-estimate -- there was more than 20 at the reception.

And just to clarify, the Hodson Success scholarship is similar to the Trust but it is used to provide financial assistance to underrepresented minority students at Hopkins. It is a merit scholarship as scholars are chosen by Admissions, but the monetary value is full need met completely through grants.

Laxfan, how does JHU do with regards to cross admits with other leading universities? It seems like the number of people who choose to accept the hodson is very small relative to the number accepted.

Blah, unfortunately I do not have access to that information. I did ask one of the counselors about why 20 students enroll. He explained that the students selected as Hodson Trust winners are amazing applicants who can be considered some of the best students in the nation. Therefore, Hodson Trust winners probably have a lot of top schools to choose from and many schools also giving them scholarships. The conversion rate of 20 out of approximately 60 is actually quite good when you factor in how unique the Hodson Trust students are...
